W.Va.-Va. team matches this weekend

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Team West Virginia will host the 30th edition of the West Virginia-Virginia Team Matches this weekend at The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

Fourteen of the state’s best golfers earned their way into the weekend-long tournament, where they’ll go head-to-head against Virginia’s best.

Highlighting this year’s team is recent W.Va. Golf Hall of Fame nomination Pat Carter of Huntington. The 13-time W.Va. Amateur champion, a staple for team matches, won the W.Va. Mid-Amateur and W.Va. State Amateur late year, as well as earning points for his play in various other championships.

A regular member of the team is Hurricane’s Sam O’Dell, who was Low Amateur at the 2012 W.Va. Open and had a fourth place finish in the W.Va. Amateur. He also won the W.Va. 2-Man Scramble. Adding to his 2012 points standings was advancing to match play in the W.Va. Mid-Amateur (O’Dell was the Champion in 2011).

Rounding out the remainder of the regular members are Green Bank’s Chad Baldwin, Mason’s Trent Roush, Barboursville’s Bruce Wetherholt, Huntington’s Ian Patrick, Charleston’s Bosten Miller, and Oak Hill’s Winston Canada.

The senior and super-senior members include all-star players as well, as the 2012 W.Va. Senior Amateur and Senior Four-Ball Champion, Huntington’s Steve Fox leads the pack. Fox was the Senior Player of the Year in 2012. Hurricane’s Harold Payne, also a member of the seniors, won the 2012 W.Va. Senior Four-Ball alongside Fox; and claimed many W.Va. Senior Series low rounds of the day to secure his place on the team. Payne was also the Low Senior at the W.Va. Amateur and is a member of the W.Va. Golf Hall of Fame. The remaining players on the senior team are Williamstown’s Steve Jackson, who is the 2012 W.Va. Senior Amateur Stroke Play Champion. Senior Amateur Match Play semi-finalist, Scott Bibbee finalized the senior team.

Representing this year’s super seniors are Charleston’s Allen Bailes and Jim Carpenter, of Martinsburg. Bailes is the 2012 W.Va. Senior Amateur Gold Division Champion, while both players earned several W.Va. Senior Series victories to lock up their spot.

The W.Va.-Va. Team Matches first began in 1949, with a few years where the tournament was not played. Team West Virginia suffered a devastating loss year, and has not won the “Ye Ole’ Feudin Stick” since 2009. Last year was the first time Team West Virginia had ever held a lead on Virginia soil, as it gained a first round lead at Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke.

Visit for updates throughout the weekend.

Finally, warmer weather has arrived to the Mountain State. I’m told, it’s socially acceptable to be late nowadays and there is even a term for it — being fashionably late. Of course, I have also been told that camo is the new black in fashion. I don’t care much for tardiness, or for fashion for that matter, but I am perfectly content with the weather forecaster’s report as of late. And if wearing camouflage is trendy, I will fit in just nicely at any social gathering.
