Shady Spring, Daniels to meet for championship

BECKLEY — Shady Spring and Daniels picked up semifinal victories Monday in the Raleigh County Elementary School Volleyball Tournament to advance to tonight’s championship game at Stratton Elementary.

Daniels entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and made its march to Monday’s semifinal round with victories over Clear Fork and No. 3 seed Crab Orchard Saturday, before defeating No. 2 seed Maxwell Hill Monday. Daniels has not lost a game in the tournament in the best-2-out-of-3 format.

Maxwell Hill advanced to the semifinals with an opening-round win over Sophia-Soak Creek and a thrilling come-from-behind win over No. 7 seed Stratton Saturday.

Shady Spring, the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed, advanced to the semifinals with wins over Hollywood and No. 8 seed Ghent Saturday, then defeated Greater Beckley Christian on Monday. Shady Spring has lost only one game in the tournament.

Greater Beckley’s trip to the semifinals started with a tight contest with Stanaford before a hard-fought win over pesky No. 5 seed Fairdale.

Maxwell Hill and Greater Beckley will square off in the consolation match at 6 p.m. today. Daniels and Shady Spring will meet in the championship match at 6:45 p.m.
