The Old White is healing for Blixt

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — The Old White TPC knows how to cure Jonas Blixt’s blues.

Blixt has missed the cut in three of his last five tournaments, but is in a familiar position at the Greenbrier Classic.

The soft-spoken Swede is the first-round leader at the Classic after carding a six-under 64 Thursday.

“I got a couple good breaks,” the defending Classic champion said following his round. “I hit a bunch of good shots that kind of ended up kind of close to the hole, and took advantage of my opportunities. I also made, I don’t how many putts I made that were about 10 feet, and I think that was what kept the momentum going through the round.”

Blixt is playing in his second Greenbrier Classic. He’s yet to card a round worse than 67 — he had three 67s and a 66 last year.

Still, Blixt knows his first round is only as good as his last three, and he’s got plenty of golf still to play.

“I’ve never been scared of having a low scoring round in the clubhouse,” he said with a laugh. “You definitely need to back it up. I think you go back to being comfortable and feeling like I’m in the hunt and doing well.

“I’m going to go out there and play aggressive (today), too. I hope I make as many birdies again and hope I can shoot four 64s this week. That would be hard to beat.”

Last year, Webb Simpson came out firing in the first round with a 64. Simpson struggled the rest of the tournament, though, carding three-straight rounds in the 70s to finish in a tie for 41st.

“It’s hard to have good days every day,” Blixt said. “That’s why it’s so hard to back a really good round up. So I wouldn’t call it scary, but it’s hard to have two of those good days in a row.”

Blixt had four pretty good days last year on his way to winning and is on track to repeat that success this week.

He tees off on No. 1 at 1 p.m. today.
