Jim Williams doesn’t want fans of both high school football and dirt track racing to have to make a decision on which sport to watch Friday nights.
He’s done it for them.
The promoter and co-manager of Beckley Motorsports Park has moved the remainder of the track’s races to Saturday nights.
“I hate for people who enjoy both to have to have to choose,” he said. “This way they can go watch their kids and grandkids play football on Friday and then come out and enjoy the racing on Saturday.”
Racing will start with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the 3/8th-mile dirt track in Prosperity.
There will be two special purses for the winners: The Super Later Models race will pay $1,500 while the Open Wheel Modifieds race will pay $600.
“We should have a good field of cars in each class because the I-77, Elkins and Tyler County tracks aren’t running Saturday,” Williams said. “We’ll have a really good bunch of Late Models and Modifieds looking to score points here, and the Fastrak crate models looking for national points.”
The facility, celebrating its 50th year of operation, took last Friday night off to work on the track surface.
“We got it ripped up and put some moisture into the ground,” Williams said. “It’s been unseasonably hot this year.”
General admission is $12 for adults, $4 for kids ages 6-12 and free for children under 5.
