NWA/MAW to debut tonight in Beckley

BECKLEY — The Mother Ship is ready for takeoff.

History will be made tonight when National Wrestling Alliance/Mid-Atlantic Wrestling holds its first-ever card. Bell time from the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center will be 7 p.m.

The Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship will be the crown jewel of MAW, which has dubbed itself The Mother Ship of the NWA. The first holder of that belt will be decided in tonight’s main event, when Lance Erickson takes on “The Dark Child” Chance Prophet in a ladder match.

The belt will be suspended from the rafters above the center of the ring. The first wrestler to scale the ladder and secure the strap will be the winner.

NWA/MAW owner Matt Epling, who purchased the organization last fall, chose the Mid-Atlantic title as the top prize because “it’s the legacy.” There has not been a Mid-Atlantic champion since “Hands of Stone” Ron Garvin in 1987. He relinquished the belt after beating “Nature Boy” Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

“We’re bringing back the NWA prestige that was around here back in the day of hard wrestling, solid entertainment,” Epling said.

Other wrestlers scheduled to wrestle include Jock Samson, Façade, Rickey Shane, Ron Mathis, Black Onyx and Preston Quinn.

Also appearing tonight will be Christian York, who currently wrestles for Total Nonstop Action.

Tickets for tonight’s event are $30 for ringside VIP seating, $20 reserved and $15 general admission.
