Beckley-Stratton’s Lady Bulldogs defeated the Park Lady Roadrunners in the championship game of the Raleigh County Middle School championship 33-18 to improve to 15-0 on the season.
“This group is like a family,” Bulldogs coach Timmie Korcyzk said. “They hang together. They run together. They were sad that it was over.”
The Lady Bulldogs were an experienced bunch, with 9 of the 11 players being 8th graders.
“Most of these kids have been with me for 3 years,” Korcyzk said. “They know what I want. They even run practice. They get started early. They get shooting early. They get stretched early. They run the practice for the first half of an hour. I’ve taught them defense. This is a talented group of children.”
Korcyzk felt that the hard defensive play helped secure the championship.
“I thought they played really hard. They played really good defense,” Korzyk said. “We got a real good game out of Bailee Brooks (8 points), probably her best game all season.”
8th graders Kaliyah Creasey and Aaliyah Williams were MVPs and all-tournament. Creasey had 7 points and Williams had 10.
“They did such a good job, they ran the show. I couldn’t have asked for better kids this year. They did everything they were supposed to do. I’ve never had a better season.”
Park’s leading scorer was Ashlee Lane who had 11.
