Indoor soccer tournament to start today at KSI Sports

BECKLEY — For fans looking for something to beat the wintertime blues today, look no further than KSI Sports in Shady Spring.

Over 200 boys and girls will gather at the old Shady Spring Middle School today and tomorrow to partake in the second annual “It’s So Shweet” Indoor Soccer Tournament, sponsored by Sheetz.

The event is free to the public and games will run from 10:40 a.m. through 5:20 p.m. this evening. They’ll begin again at 9 a.m. Sunday and will crown the champions around 5 p.m., leaving plenty of time to make it home in time for the Super Bowl.

The tournament will feature boys and girls U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 teams from around the state.

Tournament director John Foster expects teams from Huntington and Ripley as well as Greenbrier, Fayette, Nicholas and Raleigh counties.

Indoor soccer differs from the more traditional outdoor game. Indoor soccer utilizes four players and a goalkeeper instead of the usual 11 players. It also features walls around the playing surface, similar to what would be seen in hockey. There is no offside penalty, which usually leads to a high-scoring, high-intensity game.

KSI Sports is located in the School of Harmony Complex at 159 Granby Circle in Beaver.
