BECKLEY — Billie Jo Jackson thinks Mother Nature has become a dirt track racing fan.

Last week’s weather for the Black Gold 50 races at Beckley Motorsports Park backs her up.

“It had rained all week, then Friday and Saturday were beautiful. The crowd was unbelievable,” said Jackson, who manages BMP with her husband Joe. “Mother Nature helped us out because Sunday it started raining again.”

While the track held races in most of its classes, the main event was the actual Black Gold 50, co-sponsored by Little General Stores.

“Fans have asked for Super Late Models, and we gave them a race,” Jackson said. “Everybody had a ball.

Charleston racer Zach Dohm won the Black Gold 50 for the second straight year. He pocked $10,000 after finishing ahead of Josh McGuire, David Watts, Jared Hawkins and Rick Williams.

Dohm started seventh in the feature and came all the way to the front.

In all, the two-day weekend paid over $30,000 to the drivers. Other class winners included Dave Defibaugh (AMRA Modifieds), D.J. Critchley (Hornets) and Brad Richardson (Street Stocks).

Tonight will be a traditional night of BMP races, with all six classes represented — Super Late Models, Fastrak Crates, AMR Modifieds, Outlaws Streets, Street Stocks and Hornets.

Two more big weekends are upcoming, including an appearance by the super-fast, winged Sprint cars.

“Everybody has been asking for the Sprint cars, and we’ve got them coming July 12,” Jackson said. “Kenny Schrader is coming Aug. 16.”

Not only is the famed NASCAR driver coming in August, but on Aug. 15, fans can enter a raffle to ride in a two-seater with Schrader.

“We call it ‘Getting Dirty with Kenny,’” Jackson said.

Although there have been a few cancellations, in all it’s been a great spring and early summer at BMP.

“When the weather holds off, people are coming to the races,” Jackson said. “All the drivers are having a good summer, and the track is in real good shape thanks to Bill Duncan, my dad. He’s put a lot of hours out there.”

Gates will open at 4 p.m. today. Racing starts at 7 p.m.
