Tiger sitting out Greenbrier Classic

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — An announcement on Tiger Woods’ website Wednesday has all but ruled out a second-consecutive appearance at The Greenbrier Classic from the world’s No. 1 golfer.

Woods did not specifically address the fourth-year event, which will be played July 1-7 at The Greenbrier’s Old White TPC Course in White Sulphur Springs, but he did say that his doctors have advised him to take a few weeks away from the game because of a strain of his left elbow that was discovered in an exam upon his return from the U.S. Open.

“I have been advised to take a few weeks off, rest and undergo treatment,” said Woods in a statement advising that he would not be participating in the AT&T National June 27-30 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. “I’ll be ready for the British Open, and I’m looking forward to playing at Muirfield.”

The British Open is scheduled for July 18-21.

The Greenbrier Classic won’t be void of star power, even if Woods is unable to attend.

Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, John Daly, Lucas Glover, Rory Sabbatini, Webb Simpson, Tom Watson, Boo Weekley, Nick Watney and Ben Curtis are among the big names that have already committed to play in The Greenbrier Classic.

Returning champions Stuart Appleby (2010), Scott Stallings (2011) and Ted Potter Jr. (2012) will also be back to try to win another title.

More commitments are expected in the coming weeks.
