Shady tournament to start Thursday

Plenty of home games set for Post 32

Shady Spring will be hosting its annual summer high school baseball tournament starting Thursday. Eight area teams will be divided into two pools, with the championship being decided Sunday.

The schedule for the four-day tournament is:

n Thursday: Pool A, Greenbrier East vs. PikeView, 4 p.m.; Greenbrier East vs. Greenbrier West, 6:15 p.m.; Shady Spring vs. Greenbrier West, 8:15 p.m.

n Friday: Pool B, Woodrow Wilson vs. Liberty, 4 p.m.; Oak Hill vs. Liberty, 6:15 p.m.; Oak Hill vs. Independence, 8:30 p.m.

n Saturday: Pool A, Greenbrier East vs. Shady Spring, 8 a.m.; Shady Spring vs. PikeView, 10:15 a.m.; PikeView vs. Greenbrier West, 12:30 p.m.; Pool B, Woodrow Wilson vs. Oak Hill, 2:45 p.m.; Woodrow Wilson vs. Independence, 5 p.m.; Liberty vs. Independence, 7:15 p.m.

In Sunday’s semifinals, the Pool B winner will take on the Pool A runner-up at 12:30 p.m., followed by the Pool A winner against the Pool B runner-up at 2:45 p.m. The championship game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

American Legion baseball fans will have plenty of opportunity to see Beckley Post 32 in the coming days.

Post 32 will host Fairmont at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty High School. Beckley will then welcome Clarksburg at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Parkersburg at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both of those will be at Woodrow Wilson High School.

The teams will play seven-inning doubleheaders each day.

Former Marshall pitcher Aaron Blair officially became a professional Saturday when he signed his contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Blair, 21, signed a deal worth $1.435 million, according to Baseball America. The Diamondbacks selected Blair with the 36th overall pick of the first-year player draft on June 6.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-hander from Las Vegas went 5-5 with a 2.85 earned run average and was an All-Conference USA first-team selection this spring.

Arizona has now signed all but one of its 10 draft selections.
