BECKLEY — The Raleigh County Aquatics summer swim program concluded its season in Tazewell, Va., on July 31 by competing at the Highlands Swim Association League Championships.
While this was RCA’s first year as a member of the association, the swimmers did not let first-time jitters dampen their performances.
Participating in the championship event were Brooke Turner, Grant McClure, Katie Slone, Tyler Sizemore, Lauren Shelton, Anne Guadalupi, Luke Feldhake, Jessica Boccabello, Jake Gwirtz, Shelby Craddock, Sophia Bailey, Tyler Emery, Cecilia Guadalupi, Alleeah Thomas, Adam Gwirtz, Will Bailey, Rachel Feldhake, Caleb Knuckles, Drew Burnette, Richard Bailey, Elijah Rodgers and Carley Knuckles.
As a team, RCA finished the meet in fourth place.
Head coach Eric Hatfield was pleased with the enthusiasm and strong swims his swimmers had during the meet.
“We are not the largest team in the league, but when you compete against teams that are three or four times your size, you strive for individual success,” he said. “We were able to accomplish this task.”
To get to this point in the season, the team trained four days per week, two hours per night, since May at the YMCA of Southern West Virginia and Black Knight Country Club.
Two swimmers participated on the West Virginia Southern Zone Team during the last week of July in the 1996 Olympic pool in Atlanta. Russ Sutton and Collin Knuckles, both 11 years old, made the USA Zone team by qualifying through their placement at the state championship meet back in March.
The BRY USA team competed Aug. 6-8 at Kenyon College in Ohio in the West Virginia Long Course State Championship Meet. Will Bailey finished the weekend competition by taking home the third place high point award for the 8 and under boys age group.
The state championships, with all their high points, were also bittersweet for Hatfield and the team, as this was Anne and Cecilia Guadalupi’s last meet with the team since they are moving out of state.
“Anne and Cecilia have been a joy to coach and watch evolve into excellent swimmers,” Hatfield said.
The team will take a short break before getting back in the water in September.
