Derby Dames begin new season Saturday

From Staff Reports

— The Beckley Area Derby Dames will kick off their third season Saturday against Five 40 Rollergirls from Fredericksburg, Va.

The Dames will lace up their skates at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center and the doors will open at 6 p.m.

The whistle will blow at 7 p.m. and the live roller derby action will begin.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door Saturday. Admission for kids ages 6 to 12 is $5 and admission is free for kids 5 and under.

As with all BADD home bouts, a local charity has been selected to receive a portion of the proceeds. The 2014 season opener will benefit The Carpenter’s Corner, which was suggested by BADD bench coach Redd Zepplin.

“They are incredibly involved in the community,” Zepplin said. “They are feeding a lot of people that may otherwise go hungry.”

Several rollergirls are lacing up Saturday for their first official bout, including Madame Mischief and Icy ThrewYu.

Veteran skater Burn N Kell said this will be the first time BADD has skated against Five 40 Rollergirls, but they are all excited to face some new opponents.

“Our team captain this year, St. Brawly Girl, and co-captain, Phyllis Kill’er, have shown a lot of hard work and dedication working with this team,” Burn said.

She said a Mercer County female group called Distraction will be special guests and will perform the national anthem.
