West Virginia golf legend Bill Campbell dies at 90

Bill Campbell, who holds the record for the most West Virginia Amateur championships, died Friday afternoon at his Lewisburg home. He was 90 years old.

Campbell won the U.S. Amateur and USGA Senior Amateur championships — the latter twice — the Mexican Amateur Championship and the North and South Amateur Championship four times. He played in eight Walker Cup matches and was undefeated in singles matches (7-0-1), and was the playing captain in 1956.

Campbell holds the record for most West Virginia Amateur  titles with 15, and is a three-time champion of the West Virginia Open.

In 1956, Campbell was awarded the USGA’s highest honor, the Bob Jones Award for Distinguished Sportsmanship.

In 1982-1983, he served as president of the United States Golf Association, and served two terms on its executive committee. Campbell was the third American to captain the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. He is the first and only person to ever head both of golf’s worldwide governing bodies.

He is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame and the PGA Hall of Fame.

Born May 5, 1923, Campbell is from Huntington, and is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in history. He served 3 1/2 years in the United States Army during World War II, where he went from private to captain. He was combat in ETO with the 100th Infantry Division.

Campbell was the owner and manager of Campbell Insurance since 1947, and was made a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table.

Funeral arrangements are being made for Tuesday.

Finally, warmer weather has arrived to the Mountain State. I’m told, it’s socially acceptable to be late nowadays and there is even a term for it — being fashionably late. Of course, I have also been told that camo is the new black in fashion. I don’t care much for tardiness, or for fashion for that matter, but I am perfectly content with the weather forecaster’s report as of late. And if wearing camouflage is trendy, I will fit in just nicely at any social gathering.
