Roundup: Brooks named Player of the Year for Wendy's Amateur Tour

BECKLEY — Mullens’ Derek Brooks is the Wendy’s Amateur Tour Player of the Year, as selected by the West Virginia Golf Association.

Brooks finished second in the tour’s final stop of the season Tuesday, at The Resort at Glade Springs. Clarksburg’s Michael Stewart had the low round of the day on the resort’s Cobb course, shooting a 1-over-par 73. Brooks had a 74, along with Mason’s Trent Roush and Green Bank’s Chad Baldwin.

Elizabeth’s Sammi Moore won the Women’s Player of the Year, also taking home Tuesday’s low round in the women’s division with an 84.

In addition to his Player of the Year title, Brooks also won the Wendy’s Amateur Tour Hole Challenge. Similar to the PGA Tour’s Kodak Challenge, players had to play in a least six events, where their scores were tallied up, in relation to par, from each assigned hole per course. Brooks finished the challenge at 5-under-par. St. Albans’ Matthew Spry and Tornado’s Ed Schoettker won this year’s Frosty Cup, the tour’s four-ball competition.

Spry was the runner-up Player of the Year, while Baldwin finished the tour in third place.

Touchdown runs were by Deontray Smith (47), Andrew Tomlin (1), Sutton Radford (2) and an 80-yard kickoff return by Kelshawn Grant.

Collins had touchdown runs from Ryan Muse (1) and Devonte Patrick (2).

Beckley-Stratton (1-2) hosts Shady Spring next Wednesday.
