The Greenbrier Sporting Club hosts Project Healing Waters

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — The Greenbrier resort, world-renowned for its trout fishing, recently hosted seven veterans from all over West Virginia at its first Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) event.

The national program has been helping veterans in need for almost 10 years, teaching them fly-fishing skills, including tying flies and building rods in addition to fishing.

Jacob Ott, Director of Outdoor Pursuits at The Greenbrier Sporting Club, extended the invitation to the PHWFF team, which were thrilled with the opportunity to fish in Howard’s Creek at The Greenbrier.

“Our current project for the veterans was to have them build their own fly rod. The excitement was to have them finish their rods in time for this event and test out their rods,” said Paul Moore, W.Va. Regional Coordinator for PHWFF. “The achievement of building their rods with their own hands and bringing them to fish at The Greenbrier goes a long way-. Llanding that one big trout can heal big wounds.”

Ott said it was great to have the Project Healing Waters guys at The Greenbrier.

“They really toughed it out when we had single-digit morning temperatures and lots of snow on the ground,” he said. “They still went out and caught some really great fish, including a 24-inch rainbow, the largest catch over the two days. We were all honored to host this event and give back to veterans who’ve served our country.”

The Greenbrier Sporting Club extends special thanks to: Craig Miller with Serenity Now Outfitters for generously donating a gift bag; Arlene and Mark Comora for their monetary donation; and Craig and Annhorner Truitt for their monetary donation and their time volunteering at the event.
