Rubinoff hitting clinic a success at Upper Deck

BECKLEY — It was Christmas break, so homework was probably the last thing on the minds of most of Marty Rubinoff’s students.

The hitting guru has been in Beckley for about three weeks, in town to work a hitting clinic last weekend at Upper Deck Training Center. He gave his younger group of students an assignment to do on their own at home, and asked them to bring back signed verification to prove they did the work.

Rubinoff expected to get few, if any, responses. He was shocked by the actual feedback.

“Every single one of them brought their papers back signed,” Rubinoff said.

Twenty girls and 25 boys took advantage of the opportunity to get more than a few pointers from one of the top hitting teachers in the country. Rubinoff, based in Waco, Texas, and a former coach at Cal State Fullerton, has worked with Olympians in Australia and professionals in Japan.

He brought his expertise to Beckley, forging a relationship that figures to extend into the near future.

“It was a very successful weekend,” said Tim Epling, owner of Upper Deck. “Not just from a teaching standpoint but in giving awareness to what is needed to be a good hitter.”

Rubinoff will be returning to Texas soon, but said he will be back in Beckley as soon as it can be worked out. He and Epling, who became acquainted through their mutual involvement with Ron Wolforth’s Texas Baseball Ranch in Houston, plan to work together at Upper Deck several more times.

For now, Epling said the center will be offering times for area pitchers and catchers to prepare for the 2014 season starting this Monday. For more information, call 304-673-2160 or send an e-mail to
