Hillbilly 100 qualifier tonight at BMP

BECKLEY — Any Super Late Model race driver would like a chance to compete in the Hillbilly 500.

The race, set for Labor Day weekend in Ripley, will pay a cool $25,000 to the winner.

Tonight, Beckley Motorsports Park will give a driver a chance to get in that race with its Hillbilly 100 qualifier.

“The winner gets $1,500 and a guaranteed starting spot in the Hillbilly 100,” BMP track manager Joe Jackson said. “Only 24 cars are in that race.”

Competition for that spot should be fierce tonight at the 3/8th-mile, oval dirt track in Prosperity. The Super Lates are not just competitive, but they bring a strong fan base.

All other classes — AMRA Modifieds, Fastrak Crates, Outlaw Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hornets — will also run tonight.

Gates will open at 4 p.m., with racing to begin at 7 p.m. General admission is $15. Kids ages 6-10 will pay $6, while those 5 and under get in free. Pit passes are $30.

Famed NASCAR driver Kenny Schrader will return to Beckley next week for two appearances. He will race his AMRA Modified car Friday, and on Saturday, will be part of a special promotion that will allow a lucky winner to ride with him at BMP in his special two-seater car.

The drawing for the ride with Schrader will be held tonight. Tickets can be bought at the track or at Daddy Rabbit Graphics on Ragland Road.

Finally, warmer weather has arrived to the Mountain State. I’m told, it’s socially acceptable to be late nowadays and there is even a term for it — being fashionably late. Of course, I have also been told that camo is the new black in fashion. I don’t care much for tardiness, or for fashion for that matter, but I am perfectly content with the weather forecaster’s report as of late. And if wearing camouflage is trendy, I will fit in just nicely at any social gathering.
