Oosthuizen coming to Greenbrier Classic

Add another name to the list of Major Championship winners who will be on The Old White TPC Course next week for The Greenbrier Classic.

Tournament director Monte Ortel confirmed Wednesday that Louis Oosthuizen, who won the 2010 Open Championship, will be headed to White Sulphur Springs for the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup event, which will be contested July 4-7.

The 30-year-old South African has won six times on the European Tour and nearly pulled off a victory in the 2012 Masters, losing in a playoff with Bubba Watson, who will also be playing in The Greenbrier Classic.

A total of 11 major winners will be at the tournament.

More than 100 players will take to The Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs today hoping to take the first step toward realizing the dream of joining Oosthuizen and playing in a PGA TOUR tournament.

Tee times for the PGA TOUR Pre-Qualifier for The Greenbrier Classic will begin this morning at 7:30 a.m. The top 50 players and ties from the pre-qualifier will get the opportunity to join other professional golfers that meet the qualifications to play in a Monday qualifier on the same course.

The top four finishers on Monday will advance to play in The Greenbrier Classic.

There are some notable names among the participants in today’s pre-qualifier, including one former Masters participant.

Corbin Mills, who played in the 2012 Masters after winning the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, will tee off at 11:15 a.m. today, hoping for a chance to once again rub elbows with some of the game’s biggest stars.

Mills is currently playing on the eGolf Tour, trying to work his way back to the top.

Jay Woodson, who is a contestant on the Big Break Mexico show on The Golf Channel is signed up to play in the pre-qualifier, as well.

Some of West Virginia’s top golfers will be on the course, including Concord’s Evan Muscari, a Wyoming East High School graduate. Marshall University’s Christian Brand will be attempting to make the Monday qualifier, as will veteran golfer Brad Westfall. The five-time West Virginia Open winner is the owner and operator of Tygart Lake Public Golf Course and Bel Meadow Golf Club in Grafton.
