An Open view of the Cobb

5 BNI competitors will play in W.Va. Open next week at The Resort at Glade Springs

DANIELS — Davey Jude walked away from the 34th BNI Memorial Tournament, sponsored by First Community Bank, as a first-time winner at the annual golf staple.

He would love to leave the Cobb Course at The Resort of Glade Springs — site of Monday’s BNI championship round — with another trophy in 10 days.

Five of the 152 golfers who competed in the BNI will return to the Cobb next week for the 81st West Virginia Open. All four — Todd Albaugh Jr., Winston Canada, Drew Green and Brandon Waters, in addition to Jude — are familiar with the course.

“I’m a member there. I play there every day,” Canada said after his round Sunday at The Brier Patch Golf Links. “I feel pretty confident.”

Canada, Green, Jude and Waters were all in Monday’s championship flight, and Albaugh Jr. was in the first flight. Green may have the biggest advantage of them all — he works at the Cobb Course.

“I get to play there a good bit,” Green said Saturday, after he shot a 2-over-par 72 at Brier Patch. “Being at Glade is going to be really fun. That’s why I wanted to (qualify). With it being my home course, I wanted to get in really bad.”

“It gives me a way to keep pressure on (myself) to hit good shots when it counts and under tournament conditions,” Albaugh Jr. said. “It helps me get used to the greens. The tees will be a little different, but I have played the back tees a few times, in the State Amateur qualifier and the Open qualifier.”

All but Jude qualified at the Cobb qualifier, but Jude knows all about playing championship golf there. In addition to his BNI win, he and his dad, David, won the Father-Child Championship on the Cobb last month.

“It’s definitely going to help because of the green speeds,” Jude said. “Honestly, getting to play that course is such a good time. It’ll definitely show who’s the good golfers compared to the bad golfers. It’s going to stand out.”
