Patriots favored at Raleigh County Middle School Championships

By Wayne Bennett

BECKLEY — The 38th Raleigh County Middle School Wrestling Championship will be held Tuesday at Park Middle School. Wrestling will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue throughout the evening.

Independence will be seeking its third straight team title and, from my point of view, should win handily. The young Patriots have won all the local tournaments they have wrestled in this season and are currently ranked tied for third in the state middle school poll. Shady Spring, Park and Beckley-Stratton will provide a good battle for second place.

Individually, Hunter Taylor and Alex Hart of Independence will be seeking their third county championship. Taylor will wrestle in the 95-pound class and Hart is at 102. Hart’s dad, Jeremy Hart, was a three-time county champion and is currently the head coach at Independence. He won his titles in 1991-92-93.

Wrestlers who will be seeking a second county title are Indy’s Jacob Eller and Isaac Trotter, Park’s Tyree Swafford and Elijah Woods along with Shady’s Seth Buckland.

Here’s a few names to watch for:

78 pounds: Bryce Perdue (SS), Ryan Dillon (I), Dalton Agnor (P);

84: Dalton Clifton (I), Sean Dawson (I-B);

90: Jacob Eller (I) Micha Daniels (BS);

95: Hunter Taylor (I), Anthony Pannell(P);

102: Alex Hart (I), Justice Smith (P);

110: Seth Buckland (SS), Nathan Warden (I);

116: Heagan Harvey (I), Tyler Dean (SS);

123: Dustin Neal (BS), Sean Salmons (I);

128: Adam Daniels (I), Jim Polly (SS);

135: Levi Williams (P), Mathew McKinney (I);

145: Noah Farley (SS), Jared Goddard (I);

155: Herbie Meador and Nathan Wood (I), Ryan Williams (BS);

171: Tucker Lawson, Colton Shrewsbury and Elijah Trotter (I);

190: Tyree Swafford (P), Isaac Trotter (I);

285: Zach Woods(P), Logan Muncie(I), Walton Tyler (I-B).

If Raleigh County schools are canceled on Tuesday, the tournament will be rescheduled for Thursday.

Several local high schools will participate in the Shady Mania Tournament on Saturday. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.

This week a squeeze of the water bottle goes to Bill Snuffer of Oak Hill. Bill is a big wrestling fan and an avid reader of this column. His son Chris wrestles for Collins Middle School.
