Registration begins for Smith Memorial 5K/10K

BECKLEY — The YMCA of southern West Virginia is doing what it can to make sure a fallen Beckley hero is never forgotten.

Registration has begun for the seventh annual Cpl. Chuck Smith Memorial Race, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex.

The event, which honors the late Beckley Police officer who was killed in the line of duty in August of 2006, hopes to use the event to help promote healthy, drug free lifestyles to children in the southern West Virginia region through active participation in physical activities at the YMCA.

“Cpl. Smith put his life on the line of duty and we all respect him,” YMCA Sports and Recreation Director Daniel Vass said. “Whether we knew him personally or just heard stories from the family, we are all grateful for what he did.”

This is the seventh year the event has been held, all of which have been a success.

“It’s been going pretty well this year. We’re in the process of taking applications,” Vass said. “We’re going to use the same course as last year. People seem to really like it.”

The 10K course will start at the YMCA Soccer Complex and wrap around Woodrow Wilson High School and back, before going through Beckley-Stratton Middle School and back to the complex.

The 5K course will be around the Soccer Complex and straight through the intersection, around the Department of Motor Vehicles and then back to the complex.

“We’re hoping we get a large turn out,” Vass added. “We’re waiting for people to sign up and we’ll go from there. It’s really starting to come together.”

Registration for the 5K is $10 through the day of the event, and the 10K is $15. Same day registration for both races will increase $5.

Runners interested in competing in the event may contact Vass at 304-252-0715 or e-mail daniel.vass@ymcaswv.com.

Registration forms can also be picked up at the front desk of the Y.
