Fastrak Triple Crown at BMP

BECKLEY — Fastrak, one of the top pro Late Model (Crates) dirt-track racing series in the country, returns to Beckley Motorsports Park today.

The 3/8th-mile oval dirt track in Prosperity will host the first leg of the Eighth Annual Fastrak Triple Crown. Wythe (Va.) Raceway and Princeton Speedway are the other sites.

Each event will play $2,000 to win, with a guaranteed $250 to start. In all there’s $30,000 in prize money.

“We’re expecting to have a lot of racers from the East coast,” BMP track manager Joe Jackson said. “We’ve received several calls from out-of-state drivers wanting directions and info on the track. It should be a pretty good race.”

Fastrak has visited Beckley regularly the past few years, and held its annual World Series here last October.

In a press release, Fastrak promises “entertainment, not just racing.” There will be driver introductions, a 4-wide salute, kids riding in the pace truck during opening ceremonies and fireworks.

A driver meet and greet is also scheduled. Fans can get  autographs and have photos taken of them with the racers.

The Fastrak event will be the first feature race of the night. It will also double as the Mike Faykus Sr. Memorial Race, honoring a local racing legend and friend of the Beckley racing community.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. today, with racing to begin at 7 p.m. General admission is $12; kids 5 and under get in free. Pit passes are $30.

Last week, NASCAR racer Kenny Wallace visited the track for the second consecutive year and won with his AMRA Modified. He held off strong efforts by two local racers, 17-year-old Michael Moore and longtime BMP fixture Joe Meadows.

“We had a good crowd and everyone had a good time,” Jackson said. “We look forward to him coming back.”
