Beckley racetrack hosts Fan Appreciation Night tonight

BECKLEY — Want to put a face to a car number?

And eat bargain-priced hot dogs, as well?

Those activites are part of the fun this evening as Beckley Motorsports Park holds its annual Fan Appreciation Night.

“We’re going to have dollar hot dogs, and at intermission, we’re going to bring every car out onto the track,” track co-manager Billie Jo Jackson said.

“We encourage all the fans to come down and meet the drivers. You can get their autographs and get to know them.”

It’s a regular night of racing at the 3/8th-mile oval dirt track in Prosperity. All six classes (Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, Crates, Street Stocks, Outlaw Streets and Hornets) will run.

And, for the first Friday in what seems like over a month, there is no chance of rain.

The track was rained out July 5, and often was in the middle of thunderstorms on the other days.

“We’ve been racing. We’ve pulled through,” Jackson said. “Last Friday, you could be standing in the sun, and walk 10 feet and get raindrops on your face.

“The weather looks great for tonight. I think it will be a good night of racing.”

Gates will open at 4 p.m. Racing starts at 7 p.m. General admission is $12. Kids ages 6-10 will pay $6, while those 5 and under get in free. Pit passes are $25.

While tonight is a regular show at BMP, with a standard payout, things will crank up in August.

The third annual City National Bank Down and Dirty 30 for Super Late Models is set for Aug. 2.

The following Friday, BMP will host a Hillbilly 100 qualifier, also for Late Models.

Popular NASCAR driver Kenny Schrader will make his return to Beckley Aug. 15-16. That Thursday, he will bring his two-seater car and four AMRA Open Wheel Modifieds. As part of a Federated Auto Parts promotion, fans can drive those cars, with instruction from Schrader.

He’ll compete in the Fast and Furious 40 that Friday. The race, for AMRA Modifieds, will pay $2,000 to win.

“That’s an ungodly amount of money for them,” Jackson said. “They never race for that much money.”
