Old White to celebrate 100 years

The home of The Greenbrier Classic will be having a birthday today, and the celebration should be something special.

The Old White TPC Course will turn 100 years old today, and representatives of The Greenbrier Classic and the PGA Tour will be on hand to commemorate the event today.

Beginning with the presentation of colors and national anthem by the Greenbrier East High School honor guard at 11:30 a.m., the celebration of the Charles Blair MacDonald-designed course, which first opened in 1914, will include remarks from Greenbrier historian Dr. Robert Conte, Greenbrier director of sport and recreation Robert Harris, executive director of The Greenbrier Classic Monte Ortel, Greenbrier president Jeff Nmiec and Greenbrier owner and chairman Jim Justice.

Justice will use a historical driver and replica golf ball from the era to strike the ceremonial first ball at the first tee of The Old White TPC at 12:15 p.m.

The Old White TPC has been played by the likes of Ben Hogan, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Joe DiMaggio, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Woodrow Wilson, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush over the years, and legendary golfer Sam Snead shot 60 six times on the course and recorded his final hole-in-one there in 1995.

In 2011, the course became a part of the PGA Tour’s TPC Network, an exclusive group of the most prestigious golf courses in the nation.
