King’s Warriors’ Reitnour not your average coach

There’s just something unique about Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors’ manager Scott Reitnour.

There’s a glow around him — a certain beam to his smile. But it’s not his success as a coach that makes him that way.

And make no mistake about it, Reitnour is a man of success. He was named the 2012 North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association Coach of the Year, and his Wesleyan Christian Academy Trojans finished the season a perfect 25-0, leaving them ranked No. 3 in the country, according to MaxPrep.

“Trophies are OK,” Reitnour said. “But they gather dust, and I don’t want to store up treasure where moths and dust will creep in and destroy. I want to store up heavenly treasures, and those are relational.

“I’m not inclined to define myself by my win-loss record,” Reitnour added. “Because if you do that, your identity will be on a roller coaster. I personally went from 23-1 to 4-10-2 to 25-0 to 1-4. And now we’re turning it; we’re 3-4.”

The King’s Warriors hoisted their second-ever trophy on Wednesday night, when they defeated the West Virginia Chaos 3-1 for the Coal Cup.

But again, the trophy didn’t matter to Reitnour.

“A little brass for the mantel, right? I mean, personally, trophies just gather dust. They don’t mean anything to me,” said Reitnour. “But the things that matter are what that meant to the guys, what it meant to our organization and what it means to Dr. (James) Blume. Those things matter to me.

“Dr. Blume is really proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. I care about that. He’s a very benevolent, generous, and loving owner. He serves. He loves. He works really hard.” Reitnour added. “The fact that he can lift that trophy means a lot to me.”

The win marked the second-straight victory for the King’s Warriors, who improved to 3-4-0 on the season following the victory over the Chaos and a 3-2 victory over S.C. United on Friday.

“The results are a secondary phenomenon,” Reitnour explained. ‘We turned the scoreboard off (in training) and started focusing on ourselves — the effort we put forth in training and matches and investing in the process and how we train and treat each other as players and as people.”

The Warriors will look to improve to .500 with a victory on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Carter Field against Virginia Beach, a victory that would tie last season’s number of wins and edge the Warriors closer to playoff contention.

But whether the Warriors win is secondary for Reitnour.

“I care if we win;  winning is a byproduct. That’s all it is,” he added. “It’s a byproduct of love, training properly, giving your best effort. Read John Wooden’s definition of success. It’s not if I win or lose. It’s how much effort we put into it. The real victory is watching how much effort these guys are putting into the matches.

“That’s victory,” Reitnour said. “That’s success.”
