From Staff Reports

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock Sliders jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off the Miners over the last four innings to defeat West Virginia 4-3 Wednesday and sweep the two-game series.

The Sliders scored in the bottom half of the first inning on a Cooper Mickelson RBI single and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third via a passed ball with the bases loaded and a RBI single by Max McDowell.

Parker Osborne doubled home Max McDowell in the bottom of the fifth increasing the lead to 4-0 for Slippery Rock.

The Miners however would not go quietly as Douglas Votolato sparked the Miners rally with a double in the sixth bringing home Cameron Balough and Dale Davis to cut the lead to 4-2.

Pat Kregeloh opened the Miners’ half of the seventh with a triple and was singled home by Brandon Koch to make it a one-run game and keep the Miners’ momentum alive.

West Virginia kept the pressure up in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with just one out. But Sliders reliever Cole Lentz pitched out of the jam ending the Miners’ threat.

The Miners did get a bit of good news as Chillicothe defeated Butler 1-0 dropping the Miners’ magic number to two to clinch the Eastern Division of the Prospect League..

West Virginia returns home today for a key two-game series with third place Chillicothe which is still alive in the playoff hunt. The first pitch is 7:05 p.m. at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
