BECKLEY — Thumbs up ... to students and officials at Victory Baptist Academy in Beaver. The students sold sticker cards with peel-off coupons for goods at area businesses. Of the funds raised, $2,000 was donated to Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the rest will be used to help repair the roof and gutters at the school that were damaged over the winter.



Thumbs up ... to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine’s commitment to community service. During the 2009-10 academic year, students across all four classes at WVSOM volunteered nearly 9,900 hours to public service activities in the Lewisburg area and across the state in the school’s six statewide campus regions. Those hours represent 412 days — more than a calendar year.



Thumbs up ... to Consol Energy for donating $15 million for the construction of a 700-foot-long bridge at the Boy Scout high-adventure camp that will be built in southern West Virginia. The bridge will be 200 feet above ground and connect the camp’s main development center to the eastern half of the 10,600-acre property in Fayette County.



Thumbs down ... to not a single West Virginia school district meeting the state-mandated 180 days of instruction for the 2009-10 school year. A combination of bad weather and rigid rules on how snow days can be made up is to blame.



Thumbs up ... to a bridge on the Coalfields Expressway being named in honor of Craig Dorsey II. Dorsey, of the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department, died Jan. 30, 2007, when he responded to the Ghent Little General propane leak and explosion.

    We’ve just celebrated Independence Day. Some time during the weekend, most church goers sang a patriotic hymn such as “America the Beautiful” or “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.” Those who caught a Miners game this weekend had the opportunity to participate in our national anthem.
