Thumbs up ... to pre-schoolers in the Head Start program at Maben in Wyoming County. The children have been making hand-made Christmas cards that will be sent to military service members serving overseas.

Thumbs up ... to Bradley Elementary School art teacher Julie Midkiff for her dedication to the school. Midkiff has spent nearly two years working on a floor-to-ceiling mural in the school’s entryway.

Thumbs down ... to phone scammers telling people they have won a round-trip to Jamaica. These people are just trying to get credit card information from unsuspecting residents.

Thumbs up ... to Raleigh General Hospital’s commitment to the community. Staff donations and the hospital’s match raised $53,460 for the United Way of Southern West Virginia.

Thumbs up ... to the Blue Sulphur Community Educational Outreach Service for a project supporting area youngsters. The CEOS plan to provide a dictionary to second-graders at Alderson Elementary School.

Thumbs up ... to Rupert CEOS for collecting pull tabs from cans as one of their many service projects. The group turned over more than 60,000 tabs to help support the Ronald McDonald House.

Thumbs up ... to Cadet Col. Robert Dilley, presented the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award at the 68th annual banquet and award ceremony of the West Virginia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol in Charleston. The Spaatz Award is Civil Air Patrol’s highest cadet honor.

Thumbs up ... to Hamilton Burgess Young and Pollard for presenting the Fayette Toy Fund with a $1,000 donation. The Toy Fund annually provides Christmas gifts, stockings and much more for Fayette County children up to age 12 who otherwise might go without.
