Thumbs up ... to six West Virginia communities being honored for their efforts to beautify and clean up their corporate limits. From this area, Fayetteville and Bluefield won 2009 Clean Communities Awards from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Make It Shine program.

Thumbs up ... to The Greenbrier, which has received AAA’s top rating for hotels for the 34th consecutive year. The historic West Virginia resort is one of only three hotels nationwide to win the travel group’s Five Diamond Award each year since the rating system began.

Thumbs up ... to The Greenbrier for garnering a second positive review this week. The Forbes Travel Guide, formerly Mobil Travel Guide, gave the famous resort a four-star rating. New owner Jim Justice says the hotel is working to regain the fifth star by November 2010.

Thumbs up ... to Ada Halsey-Cottrell, who celebrated her 99th birthday recently at the Christian Family Bookstore party room with family and friends. She was presented with a proclamation by Smithers Mayor Thomas Skaggs which recognized her as Smithers’ oldest citizen and honored her for her dedication of lifetime church and civic achievements to the city.

Thumbs up ... to Lester Elementary students who took it upon themselves to replace the school’s American flag. After noticing the flag was stolen as they prepared for 9/11 ceremonies, the students wrote to Congressman Nick Rahall, who provided a flag that had once flown over the U.S. Capitol.

Thumbs up ... to Lisa Daniel of Glen Daniel, winner of the ATV and trailer from Vietnam Veterans Group No. 20. The event was set up to raise money to take local vets on a spring trip to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.

Thumbs up ... to Raleigh County’s Hollywood and Maxwell Hill elementary schools, along with Wyoming County’s Mullens Middle School. The three were part of a list of 65 schools statewide honored for achieving 2009-10 Exemplary Accreditation status. Schools were judged by rigorous standards in reading, language arts, math, science, social studies and writing.
