Thumbs up ... to Beth Perry, named 2008 Volunteer of the Year by the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce. Perry serves on the chamber’s ambassador committee.

Thumbs up ... to Michaela Oren of Pineville, who won first place in the third-grade division in the regional portion of the 15th annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest.

Thumbs up ... to Pineville’s Evan Muscari for winning the West Virginia Junior Match Play Championship at Canaan Valley Resort.

Thumbs up ... to the Mountain State University physicians assistant class of 2011, which gave the Raleigh County Women’s Resource Center a check for $4,265. Each year, the class holds a fundraiser for a nonprofit group or organization.

Thumbs up to Valley High School staff and students who upgraded the school entrance. Marsico Brothers Concrete also donated concrete and rebar for the greyhound statue.

Thumbs up ... to veteran Bridgeport golfer Caroline Ramsey, who claimed her ninth title when she won the West Virginia Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs.

Thumbs up ... to Eddie Young, Fayette County assessor, named state Assessor of the Year.

Thumbs up ... to the West Virginia Watershed Network, which recently received a Partners in Conservation Award in Washington. The national award is given for achieving natural resource goals.

Thumbs up ... to Old Kanawha Baptist Church in Pratt, one of seven Baptist churches organized before 1800 in what is now West Virginia. The congregation will celebrate its 216th anniversary June 28.
