Thumbs up ... to West Virginia, which ranked sixth in the nation in Education Week’s Quality Counts 2008 based on six areas: Chance-for-Success; K-12 Achievement; Standards, Assessments and Accountability; Transitions and Alignment; the Teaching Profession; and School Finance. West Virginia’s overall grade was a B-minus. The state received an A in Standards, Assessment and Accountability.

Thumbs up ... to the $196,000 Sen. Robert C. Byrd secured to support establishment of the proposed Southern West Virginia Multicultural Museum and Community Center, which would offer tutoring, mentoring, counseling sessions and classes dealing with parenting, health awareness, arts and performing arts and computers.

Thumbs up ... to Good News Mountaineer Garage, selected by the Martin Luther King Jr. West Virginia Holiday Commission for the “Living the Dream” Service Organization Honor Roll.

Thumbs up ... to Mountain State University, celebrating its 75th anniversary. The private, nonprofit institution began as a junior college and opened with 97 students and classrooms rented from a local church during the Great Depression. The school has a total annual enrollment of more than 8,000 students from all 50 states and a host of other countries.

Thumbs up ... to Becky Green, Summers County’s band director, recognized by the 2007 Governor’s Honors Academy with the Great Teachers of West Virginia Award.

Thumbs up ... to the fact that for the third consecutive year the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team will jump July 19 at the annual Friends of Coal Auto Fair, now in its fifth year at the Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex. The event is the primary fundraiser for YMCA’s sports complex. Entertainment will be provided by Taylor Made and Randy Travis.
