— For the second time in three weeks, eastern Greenbrier County is the focal point of West Virginia.

The State Fair of West Virginia begins its traditional 10-day run today in Fairlea, and thousands are expected to make their way to the expansive fairgrounds parking area, which just two weeks ago served as the main parking venue for the thousands who attended the inaugural PGA Greenbrier Classic at The Greenbrier.

It promises to be another huge economic boost for the Greenbrier Valley.

The State Fair is extremely popular. It has kept its tradition over the years while adding new features to pique the interest of longtime fair-goers.

The fair will again offer culinary competitions, a flower show, harness racing and horse shows, livestock exhibits, carnival rides and displays by 4-H and FFA members from across West Virginia.

No State Fair would be complete without top-name entertainment, and this one is no different. The pop band Boys Like Girls kicks things off tonight, and 78-year-old country music legend George Jones takes the stage Saturday night, joined by Rodney Atkins. Next Wednesday night will feature country music singer Jason Aldean with special guest Easton Corbin.

And let’s not forget the food. Hot dogs, pizza, Chinese and Italian cuisine will be sold at stands on the commercial midway.

Bengal tigers, a rodeo clown and a theatrical style circus will be among the free entertainment, along with a variety of performers who will be featured on the Center Stage.

It all adds up to 10 days of fun, excitement and enjoyment for everyone.

We encourage everyone to attend and support the fair.

This year’s theme is “Genuine Homegrown Fun!”

That pretty much sums up what the State Fair of West Virginia is all about.
