Sweep it up

The Register-Herald

— Approximately 2,000, yes, 2,000 volunteers will take to the streets, hillsides and streams today and tomorrow to clean up our environment and help make southern West Virginia shine.

The sixth version of Sherrie’s Sweep gets under way this morning and continues into Saturday. Targeting trash of all types, organizers expect thousands of pounds of litter to be picked up and hauled away for proper disposal.

Sherrie Hunter, also affectionately known as “the Trash Lady,” said the growth of the program from dozens to thousands of volunteers during the last few years is both humbling and awesome.

Awesome is a fitting term. You hear it a lot, but when you really think about it, this is awesome.

Thanks to numerous individuals and organizations — Hunter, other members of the Make It Shine Committee, the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce and many more — this effort has been mobilized and expanded far beyond what most, if not all, expected.

What it really is is another testament to what people can do when they come together and act on behalf of a great cause.

Cleaning up our communities. It’s not that hard, and even if you aren’t officially registered as a volunteer, you can get out today, tomorrow or whenever the urge strikes you and help to rid the landscape of unsightly litter.

We commend every person, whether they clean up a bag full or a handful of trash, for making the effort.

Sweep it clean!
