Sinking ship

Although the Western Greenbrier Co-Generation project is still alive, it’s hard to get too excited over last week’s announcement that $250,000 had been secured from a private source to, in manager Wayne Brown’s words, complete the first phase of the $416 million clean-coal, gob-burning project initially designed to generate enough electricity to power 85,000 homes, create hundreds of local jobs and provide a tremendous economic boost to the area.

This weekend initiates the benchmark experience for area students who’ve finally reached the top of their particular academic ladder.

Promotion

Staff and members of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce have been busier than usual the past few weeks, and that’s a good thing for our area.

Move on

West Virginia University’s faculty senate has again issued a vote of no confidence for Mike Garrison — for the second time in less than a year. It didn’t want him in the first place. Nobody was surprised by Monday’s balloting.

Ordinance

A proposed pet ordinance is more likely to land Beckley city officials in the doghouse than solve an animal control problem.

Tamarack

To say we were a little taken aback late last week — after West Virginia Parkways Authority chairman Joe Martin took a shot at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center, and then proclaimed that the state has no intention of taking over at Tamarack until something is done about the facility’s $1 million annual deficit — is putting it mildly.

Fire levy

Far-fetched? Not really. As Register-Herald reporter Mannix Porterfield pointed out in a recent series, a number of volunteer fire departments in the area are financially strapped, and unless relief is found, they could be forced to shut down.

In the past few years, the number of reported rabies cases has been large enough that we should definitely be concerned when it comes to valuable livestock and personal pets.

Speak up!

Let’s face it. We don’t like to become involved in thorny situations. We keep quiet because we don’t want to engage ourselves in “somebody else’s business.”

How many more?

Heads are rolling in Morgantown. First, WVU’s top academic officer Provost Gerald Lang and now R. Stephen Sears, dean of the College of Business and Economics, have tendered their resignations in the wake of the master’s degree snafu surrounding Heather Bresch.

How fortunate

Forget what any of the detractors may have said or are still mumbling about, West Virginia University hit the jackpot when it promoted Bill Stewart to head up the football program.
