Cleaning time again

Opportunities coming up for sprucing up private, public property

During the next three weeks, residents of Raleigh and Wyoming counties will have the opportunity to rid public and private properties of hazardous household waste, old appliances, scrap metal and trash as three major clean-ups are slated to take place.

This Thursday through Saturday in Wyoming County, the Upper Guyandotte Watershed Association will host its third annual appliance and scrap metal collection at the Mullens Opportunity Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Junk appliances, vehicles with gas tanks and tires removed, and a variety of other bulky metal items will be accepted and for each item brought in, individuals will be given a ticket for a chance at winning a lifetime hunting and fishing license. More information can be obtained by calling 304-923-4995.

Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Raleigh County Armory, citizens can dispose of hazardous household waste, including paint-related products, motor oil and filters, batteries, swimming pool cleaners, drain/oven/floor cleaners and a variety of other items. Questions as to acceptable items can be answered by calling 255-9335.

In a few weeks, on Oct. 13 and 14, the 2006 version of Sherrie’s Sweep will take place as the Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce’s “Make It Shine” committee arms the community with trash bags and litter sticks to go throughout the area ridding the landscape of litter. More than 200 volunteers participated last year and groups and organizations are encouraged to participate and register by contacting the chamber office at 252-7358.

All three of these events are a perfect opportunity for the citizenry to spruce up our environment. We encourage everyone to take an active role in one fashion or another.
