Hit-and-run

Vehicles, personal property are one thing — human beings are quite another

As of last evening, local law enforcement authorities were still searching for a suspect wanted in a hit-and-run accident which took place early Monday morning in Coal City.

Unfortunately, hit-and-runs happen way too frequently. But the majority don’t involve clipping another human. That’s what has us stirred up in this case.

Eyewitness accounts say 84-year-old Lewis Clay Duncan — who luckily is still alive, albeit in bad shape at Raleigh General Hospital — was standing along the berm of the road about 8 a.m., waiting to cross over to White’s Service Center, when a pickup truck ran off the pavement and struck the elderly Duncan before continuing down Coal City Road, toward Pemberton, without stopping.

An unthinkable, despicable, act.

So the search is on for the driver of a late 1990s model Dodge full-size pickup, with black paint, red striping and chrome trim.

Police are asking the public for any tips they may have and are indicating that felony charges will likely be filed. If you have any information on this terrible event, please contact the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department at 304-255-9300 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867.

We’re hopeful the sheriff’s department can apprehend and charge this criminal post haste. In turn, prosecutors need to seek a measure of swift, stern justice against the assailant.

Mr. Duncan, it’s a miracle you survived and we wish you Godspeed in your recovery.
