Graduation celebrates the past and heralds hope for the future

This weekend initiates the benchmark experience for area students who’ve finally reached the top of their particular academic ladder.

Some graduates from trade schools, high schools and colleges have already received diplomas, and by mid-June, many more will have taken that celebrated walk across the stage for the handshake and ticket to the future.

Every graduation is a mile marker for the students and for all of us. That coveted piece of paper that certifies their achievement puts them one step closer to becoming a vital link in our state’s economy.

Their success testifies to improvements in our educational system. A rising number of graduates contrasted with a lower number of high school dropouts is just cause for celebration.

Many of the students will have a short breather before heading to college, further training or entering the workforce.

Grads, this is a good time for you to take stock of your plans for the future. We hope you will choose your life’s work carefully. It’s important to consider financial advancement, but it’s equally important to explore ways to invest in your community.

We hope you will choose a career in which you will not only be able to succeed in making money, but one that challenges you and develops your full potential. If you’re going to spend the most productive part of your day making money at something, that job should be one you can approach each day with enthusiasm.

That begins with the attitude you have about yourself. You need to take pride in what you’ve already accomplished and go into the next phase of your life with a willingness to learn more. A successful life is one that continues to grow and expand in its sense of purpose.

So, as you graduate, celebrate the experiences and opportunities that have brought you this far, but don’t believe you’ve reached a final destination. Whether you’re planning to pursue another degree or get a job, realize this is just the beginning of a new set of experiences and opportunities. Appreciate them and use them well.
