Thumbs up ... to first responders, volunteers, businesses and individuals who have pulled together to try and work through and support the families and community following Tuesday morning’s explosion at the Little General Store in Ghent that killed four people and seriously injured five others.

Thumbs up ... to Monroe County, named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by the prestigious America’s Promise-The Alliance for Youth national organization.



Thumbs up ... to Zala Ames, a resident at Manor House in Beckley, who recently celebrated her 95th birthday at a party in her honor at the apartment building.



Thumbs up ... to the West Virginia Courtesy Patrol program. Since 1998, patrol personnel have logged more than 44.5 million miles on West Virginia’s roadways, answered nearly 1.6 million calls and assisted approximately 183,000 motorists.



Thumbs up ... to Alva Gunter, honored by members of Hollywood Baptist Church for her 95th birthday. The only surviving charter member of the church, Gunter has been an active member since 1939.
