Betty Aleen Berkhouse

FAYETTEVILLE — Betty Aleen Berkhouse, 81, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Hilltop Center, Oak Hill.

Betty was born July 17, 1931, in Roane County, the daughter of the late Charles L. Haley and Reva Pearl (Drake) Haley.

Betty worked for Noyes Mens and Boys Clothing Store as their seamstress, and she sewed for many friends and relatives. Betty was loved by everyone who knew her.

She was a member of the Cotton Hill Baptist Church at Beckwith.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Billy Gerald Berkhouse in December 2012, and one sister Kathleen Jean Haley.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son Richard Berkhouse and his wife Velda of Fayetteville; her daughter Deborah Lemon and her husband Kevin of Oak Hill; one brother Charles Leroy Haley Jr. and his wife Iris of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren Jennifer Berkhouse of Fayetteville, Melinda Tolliver and her husband Bill of Page, Rebecca Lynch and her husband Jared of Fayetteville, and Joshua Lemon of Oak Hill; and great grandchildren Kirsten Tolliver, Christopher Tolliver, Arabella Lynch, Trenton Lynch, Rosemary Tolliver; and Betty was awaiting the arrival of a great grandson in June.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill where the funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Danny Sears and Rev. Morris Nutter officiating and where the family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until time of the service. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Virginia Lee Lambert Blankenship

Virginia Lee Lambert Blankenship, 83, of Hurricane and Oak Hill, West Virginia, died March 5, 2013.

She was born in Dehue, Logan County, West Virginia, to Carl B. Lambert Sr. and Florence Davis Lambert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Blankenship Jr., a brother, Carl B. Lambert Jr., and granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Wender.

She is survived by her brother, Terry L. Lambert; her daughter, Claudia Lynn Wender; grandson, David Andrew Wender and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Audrey, and Timothy; her son, James C. Blankenship III; grandson, James C. Blankenship IV, and great-grandchildren, Jay and Amelia; and, granddaughter, Virginia Hope Dickinson and great-grandchildren Allison Johnson and Cade Dickinson.

She now rests with her husband at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, West Virginia.

Joyce Carolyn Brown

 Come celebrate Joyce Brown’s home going. Joyce was born Oct. 24th 1956, in Elyria, Ohio, and went home to be with Jesus on Feb. 25th 2013, in Kingsport, Tenn., after battling cancer for one and a half years.

Joyce was a paramedic for over 20 years and went on to get her bachelors in accounting. She was a minister of the Gospel-of Jesus Christ. She leaves behind her five children, Gerald (Bo) Ellis, Danny (Angela) Ellis, Shawn Ivey, Rollin (J.R.) Washburne (Kelly) Tahni (Lawrence Demello); 11 grandchildren five great grandchildren.

She was affectionately known as “Elmo” by her baby grandson Jacob. Her father, Charlie Brown; her four sisters and three brothers, numerous nephews and nieces.

Joyce was preceded in death her mother, Gracie Hamlin and her brothers, Eddie Ray Brown and Sebastian Brown. She is also survived by two special ladies that also were like daughters, Crystal Acord and Kelly Fouch.

Joyce spent the last 15 years ministering the gospel of Jesus Christ, Jesus was her one true love she loved to dance and praise in worship. Joyce was always quick to share a word or scripture from the Lord.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Joyce will be layed to rest in Wills Cemetery in Arnett, W.Va., next to her grandparents Rev. Golden and Pink Gibson. Officiating will be Pastor Brenda Wiley, the soloist is Debra Ann Graves.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

The pallbearers are Rollin (J.R.) Washburne, Gerald Ellis, Danny Ellis, Chris Wiley, Troy Brown Jr., and Charles Dewayne Brown. Alternates will be Gary Graves, and Kenneth Lancaster.

Flora Jean Carr

LINDSIDE — Flora Jean Carr, age 75, of Lindside, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Charleston, W.Va.

Born April 1, 1937, at Pearisburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Glendon E. and Virginia E. Mann.

Jean was of the Baptist faith, a 1955 graduate of the Greenville High School and American Red Cross Volunteer for over 20 years. She was a loving Mother and a devoted wife.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Glendon E. Carr and a sister Carolyn Peery.

Survivors include her loving husband, Howard E. Carr, two sons, Nathanial Carr and fiancé Katrina Pence of Wayside, WV, Jesse “Bob” Carr and wife Twila of Martinsburg, WV, one daughter, Kimberly Carr Page and husband Joe of Pearisburg, VA, her twin sister, Lora D. Phillips and husband Riley of Christiansburg, VA and four grandchildren, Steven M. Dalton, Angela Dawn Carr, Amy M. Carr and Christa R. Carr, numerous nieces and nephews.

It was Jean’s wish to be cremated. A Memorial Service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel with John J. Rinehart officiating. Burial will follow in the Keaton Cemetery, Greenville, WV.

Janet Manspile Cochran

BRADENTON, Fla. — Janet Manspile Cochran, 70, Bradenton, died Monday, February 18, 2013.

Born in Meadow Bluff, West Virginia, to Lacy Manspile and Eva Martin Manspile.

She moved to Bradenton in 1970 from Libertyville, Illinois.

Predeceased by her grandson,Brian Alford

Survivors include her husband, James; daughters, Lisa Brinton and Linda (Martin) Campos, all of Bradenton, Fla.; brothers, Jamie Manspile of Dawson, W.Va., Buz Manspile and Konk Manspile, both of Rainelle, W.Va.; sisters, Barb Moschella of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sue Casper of Mundelein, Ill.; six grandchildren; one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Service was held in Bradenton, Fla. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.

Gladys Carol Cook

Our beloved mother, Gladys Carol Cook, entered into her Eternal rest Monday, March 4, 2013.

She was born July 3, 1940 in Bud, W.Va., to the late Dewey and Ethel Belcher Pack.

Carol was a homemaker, caregiver, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a wonderful friend to all who knew her.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Mark H. Cook.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughter, Debra Wildey (Bob) of Mocksville, NC and Kathy White (Terry) of Bud, WV; two sons, Mark H. Carol's homecoming service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the Mullens Family Worship Center with Pastors John Rogers, Chuck Morgan, and son, Mike Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at the Cook Family Cemetery, Otsego.

Carol Jean ‘Jeannie’ McNeel Crane

LEWISBURG — Carol Jean “Jeannie” McNeel Crane, 76, of Lewisburg, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center.

Jeannie was born July 27, 1936, in Greenbrier County, to the late George and Jessie Mayhew McNeel.

Jeannie was co-founder of the American Heritage Music Hall, a retired Doctor and Dental Assistant and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband Harold E. Crane; son, Michael H. (Darlene) Crane of Grantsville; grandsons, Kevin L. Crane of Lewisburg, Joshua (Megan) Crane of Lewisburg; great granddaughter, Hanna Crane; sister, Annette McNeel (Steve) Marsh of Belington, W.Va.; brother, Tommy (Ruby) McNeel of Maryland and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with Elder Norval Mann officiating.

J. C. Lambert

MT. HOPE — J.C. Lambert, 78, of Mt. Hope, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 4, 2013.

He was born April 12, 1934 in Roderfield, McDowell County, West Virginia. He was a military veteran and worked in the coal fields. J.C. was a member of Packs Branch Baptist Church. He loved being outdoors, loved dogs in general and beagles in particular. He was competitive, loved winning, especially at pitching horseshoes. He loved attending Church (after his 1982 Salvation) and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and Pastor from the “Amen” corner of the church. Jay loved the Lord, was active in soul winning by passing out many bible tracks, while traveling in Raleigh County and places beyond.

J.C. is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Iva Lambert; brothers, Paul Lambert of Colorado, twin brother, W.B. of Florida; sisters, Nina Ross of Ohio, Evelyn Peery and Garnet Shaw of Iaeger, West Virginia, Phyllis Laflamme of Massachusetts; grandchild, Brent Anthony Magliano of Florida.

Those left to cherish his memory include, his wife Dolly Lambert of Mt. Daisy Lee Butler Moore

Daisy Lee Butler Moore, our most precious mother died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the age of 93, in the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

She was born January 23, 1920, in a log cabin on Muddlety Creek to Rev. John Frank and Martha Adaline Taylor Butler. Her grandparents were William Thomas and Mary Ellen Grimes Butler.Her grandfather was born in Enrico County, Va., and was a member of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, serving with Stonewall Jackson and with Robert E. Lee when he surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox.

 Daisy was also preceded in death by her husband Lawson Moore, four sons, Jerry, Irvin, Stephen and Trennie, two sisters, Delphia Taylor and Mary Lewis and seven brothers, Ed, Nelson, George, James, Jay, Homer and Ralph.

Surviving are five daughters, Mary Vaughan of Bradley, Carolyn Meek of Catawba, Va., Bonnie Thomas of Fayetteville, Sharon Frazee of Fenwick, and Molly Cannady of Beckley; five sons, Colin and Daniel, both of Cleveland, Texas, Donald of Summersville, Jeff of Lexington, N.C., Thomas Moore of Germany; two brothers, Jerry Allen Butler, and Thomas Wetzel Butler, both of Ohio; 29 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville, with Brother Arlis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Dotson-Simpson Cemetery at Keslers Cross Lanes.

Betty Sutphin

On Saturday, March 2nd, 2013, Betty Jo Garnette Sutphin, of Harvey Street, Beckley, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House. She was in her 85th year.

One of two daughters, Betty was born on Christmas Day in 1927, at Pratt. Her parents were the late Thomas Ottoway and Elizabeth Huddleston Garnette. Betty’s sister, Peggy Ann Schrader has preceded her in death.

Betty graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and was a devoted member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church. She served as President of the Women of the Church for many years, was a Sunday school teacher and the first women elected to serve as a deacon for the church. Betty also mentored church youth during the confirmation process.

Betty volunteered at the Montessori School for years from its inception, and was a member of the Briarcliff Garden Club and the Beckley Women's Club. She was very involved in Girl Scouts and served as a leader for many years. Betty volunteered as a Pink Lady at one of the local hospitals and was one of the founding volunteers for Hospice in Beckley.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of nearly 67 years, William Edward Sutphin; her children, Thomas Kemple Sutphin and his wife, Mary Charles, of Raleigh, NC, Elizabeth Sutphin Brown and her husband, Charles of Raleigh, NC, William Glenn Sutphin and his wife, Elisabed of Fayetteville, NC and Mary Jo Sutphin of Beckley; the grandchildren are, Ashlea Heavner, Mary Kemple Henderson, Lori Sutphin and Rebecca Holt; her great grandchildren are Will and Cross Henderson, Kaiden Pereir and Charlie Holt; her only niece: Ann Hafer, Arlington, VA; and brother-in-law, Ralph C. Schrader, Beckley, also survive.

Betty’s Memorial Service will be Saturday, March 9th, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Beckley Presbyterian Church.  The Rev’s. John C. McKinnon and Robin W. Debnam will be officiating. The family will receive friends after the service with a time of food and fellowship in the church hall.

Barber L. Taylor

FAYETTEVILLE — Barber L. Taylor, 73, of Fayetteville, entered into rest Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born on April 17, 1939, in Swiss, he was the son of the late Cecil and Rhoda Anna Smith Taylor.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Cebert Taylor and his sister, Gloria Crouse.

He was employed by Osborne’s saw mill, and was a member of Jodie First Church of God.

Survivors include his brothers, Robert Taylor of Lizemores, Douglas Taylor of Bramwell, WV, and Mickey Taylor of Fayetteville; sisters, Gladys J. Wise of Fayetteville and Lena Williams of Jodie and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Reverend Billy Morris, Reverend Jerry Hudson and Reverend Joe Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Vaughan Cemetery, Vaughan, WV.
