Macil Fred Hughes
SUN HILL — Macil Fred Hughes, 91, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012, following a long illness.
Born April 12, 1921, at Sam’s Branch, he was the son of the late Addie Shannon and James J. Hughes.
Fred spent his lifetime working on his farm at Crouch’s Farm, which he truly enjoyed. He also worked for ten years at Clear Fork Coal Company, located at Toler’s Farm. Beginning in 1940, he spent two years in CC camps in Utah, building shelters and homes for soldiers and their families. Fred was a 20-year member of the Wyoming County Committee of the FHA and was a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency for 45 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Tony Hughes; a grandson, Jay Hughes; a great-granddaughter, Sarah Cline; two brothers, George and Stacey Hughes; three sisters, Bell Carter, Macie Haney and Jocie Cline; and a son-in-law, Ernest Miller.
Those left to cherish his memory are three sons, Jessie Hughes and wife, Cheri of Oceana, Frank Hughes and wife, Moncella and Mike Hughes and his wife, Sue, both of Stafford, Va.; two daughters, Yvonne Cline and husband, Bobby of Sun Hill and Francis Miller of Stafford, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Jay Blankenship officiating. Interment will follow at Jay Hughes Cemetery, Sun Hill. Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, December 12 at the funeral home.
Tom Evans, Ron Altizer, Randall Tilley, Lou Hatfield, Roger Cook, and Fred Monk will serve as pallbearers. Dave Cook will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
