Elsie Mae (Massey) Acord

Elsie Mae (Massey) Acord, left this world on Sunday, December 9, 2012, at the home of her daughter, Rita Wix of Fairdale, W.Va.

She was born January 20, 1933, at Slab Fork. She was the daughter of Lula Esther Acord and Pink Massey who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Simon Paul Acord and her beloved husband, Samuel Austin Acord.

She is survived by her two children, Dwaine Acord and wife, Carolyn of Lester and Rita and her husband, Jesse Wix of Fairdale; grandchildren, Garie Joe Shrewsbury and wife, Jennifer of Florida, Cathy Criddle and husband, Reginald of Glen Morgan, Dana Quickle of Tornado, W.Va., Jessica Wix and fiancé Timmothy Taylor of Lester, and Megan Acord of Beckley; great grandchildren, Cade and Carly Quickle, Holt and Hunter Criddle, Megan E., Emily, and Melanie Shrewsbury. She is also survived by four brothers, Lacy Massey and wife, Nola, Junior Massey and wife, Jayne, Sherman Acord and wife, Barbara, Harless Acord and wife, Beverly of Michigan, and a sister, Linda Gray and husband, James of Glen View; a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2012, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Rev. Allen Terry officiating. Following the services, she will be laid to rest at the Acord Mountain Cemetery in Slab Fork, W.Va.

Timmothy Taylor, Lendy and Mike Acord, Holt Criddle, Cade Quickle, and Gary Riley will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Billy Gerald Berkhouse

FAYETTEVILLE — Billy Gerald Berkhouse, 83, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House, at Beckley. Billy was born October 6, 1929, in Roane County, the son of the late Rome Berkhouse and Hazel (Dye) Berkhouse.

Billy was retired from Elkem Metals Company at Alloy, W.Va.

He was a member of the Cotton Hill Baptist Church at Bethwith.

In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by two infant brothers and another brother Charles Berkhouse.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Berkhouse of Fayetteville; son, Richard Berkhouse and his wife Velda of Fayetteville; daughter, Deborah Lemon and her husband Kevin of Oak Hill; brothers, Bobby Berkhouse and his wife Bonnie of Colorado, Garland Berkhouse of Ohio, Gene Berkhouse and his wife Karen of Left Hand W.Va., Jack Berkhouse of Left Hand, and Larry Berkhouse and his wife Diane of Left Hand; sister-in-law, Geneal of Elkview, W.Va.; sister, Sue Burns and her husband Allen of Looneyville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Berkhouse of Fayetteville, Melinda Tolliver and her husband Bill of Page; Rebecca Lynch and her husband Jared of Fayetteville, and Joshua Lemon of Oak Hill; and great grandchildren, Kierston Tolliver, Christopher Tolliver, Arabella Lynch, Tristen Lynch, and Rosemary Tolliver.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, with Rev. Danny Sears and Rev. Morris Nutter officiating and where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of the service. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Hattie Mae Thompson Blevins

Hattie Mae Thompson Blevins, age 84, of Coal City, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012, at The Villages at Greystone Inn, following an extended illness.

Born August 4, 1928, in Coal City, to the late Joseph Lester and Nellie Thompson.

Ms. Blevins was a member of Coal City Freewill Baptist and enjoyed gardening.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Thompson; sisters, Margaret Nelson and Evelyn Blankenship; and a son-in-law, Ernie Black.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Martha Black of Coal City, and Barbara Morris (Steve) of Bristol, Va.; sisters, Betty Blankenship of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio, and Sue Simpson (Jerry) of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; grandchildren, Doug Black (Debbie), Brian Black, Christine Higgins (James), Ellen Rost (Andrew), step-grandson, Chris Morris (Jennifer); great-grandchildren, Ashton Makwana (Kunal), D.J. Black, Olivia and Beth Higgins, Jack and Jeb Morris.

A service to celebrate the life of Hattie Blevins will be conducted 11 a.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012, at Coal City Freewill Baptist Church, with Pastor Charlie Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Thompson Cemetery, Coal City.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley.

Barry Lane Hall

Barry Lane Hall, 59, of Prosperity, went home to be with his beloved lord and saviour, Jesus Christ on Sunday, December 9, 2012, after a short illness.

He was born July 22, 1953, in Corinne, W.Va., to the late Claude R. Hall and Vada J. Kestner of Edgewood, Md.

He graduated from Mullens High School in 1971 and went on to graduate from Mountain State University with a degree in mining technology and business. He later attended classes at West Virginia University. He was a retired safety engineer for CONSOL Inc.

Barry was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer sports fan and enjoyed spending time on the golf course, writing and playing music with his friends, and spending time with his family.

Barry was preceded in death in by his father, Claude R. Hall, mother, Vada J. Hall, brother Claude Roger Hall, and his beloved daughter, Erica Layne Hall.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Cheryl Bair Hall of Prosperity, brothers Cecil R. Hall and wife Patricia of Glen Jean, W.Va. and Randall J. Hall and wife Barbara of Fairdale, W.Va. In addition he is survived by his paternal aunt Ethel Midkiff of Columbus, Ohio, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may join the family for a celebration of Barry’s life at 3 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012, at the Bolt Church of God at Bolt, W.Va., Pastor Randall Pugh, officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.

Shanda Gayle  Woolwine Hicks

SPRINGDALE — Shanda Gayle Woolwine Hicks, 77, of Springdale, passed away Monday, December 10, 2012, at her home following a long illness.

Born March 20, 1935, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Ted Goodson and Margaret Woolwine Begley.

Shanda was a homemaker who loved her family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son Allen Hicks; her daughter Donna Joan Cheek; her brother Stone Begley; her sisters Darlene Loving, Gertie Ratliff and Janet Summers and her great-granddaughter Rhenea Walker.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years Frank Edward Hicks Jr.; her daughters Gloria Anne Werner of Gloucester, Va., Eugenia C. Johnson of Newport News, Va. and Brenda Lee Serber of Hampton, Va.; her sons Michael Hicks (Diana) and Gregory Hicks (Rhonda), all of Hampton, Va.; her brothers Delbert Woolwine (Midge) of Elkhart, Ind., Larry Begley of Gauley Bridge, Richard Begley (Mary) of Fairdale, Ted Goodson (Joetta), Bob Goodson (Loretta), John Goodson (Gladys), Tom Goodson (Mackie), and Don Goodson (Sandy); her sister Nancy Rader (Clark); her brother-in-law Terry Loving of Clifton Forge, Va.; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, in the Hampton Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hampton, Va.

John Ryan Houchins

1937-2012

II Timothy 4:7

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.

John Ryan Houchins, was born April 8, 1937 to Ernest L. and Hazel Mann Houchins in South Beckley, W.Va. He passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, VA., at the age of 75.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Nita Jean Houchins Cecil and brother Ernest Lee Houchins Jr.

In addition his children’s mother Brenda Brooks Houchins Rishell. John is survived by his wife Virginia Simmons Houchins of Lindside; daughter Linda Jean Houchins Oaks (Eric), grandson Adam Jeffrey Oakes of Sterling, Va., son Jeffrey Brooks Houchins of Frederick, Md., step-children Tomme Warrington Saltvick (Brad), Casey Ritter Warrington of Santa Rosa, Calif., Amanda Warrington Rowe (Albert) of Sterling, Va. and step grandchildren Tiffany Eden Warrington Rowe Hamilton (Michael) of Gloucester, N.C. and Wylie Bear Warrington Rowe of Sterling, Va., a maternal uncle Richard Mann of Shady Spring, W.Va.  and many cousins whom he treasured.

He attended Mercer County Schools, graduating in 1955 where he was remembered as a kind and courteous classmate. He received a BA in Graphic Arts in 1959 from Concord College. He began his career at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in the art department. In 1965 he relocated to Northern Virginia where he worked for various firms. He retired from the Department of State in 1994. He returned to Monroe County where he often said his fondest memories were of playing with family members on Buzzard Run and the narrows of Hans Creek.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at Appalachian Christian Center in Peterstown, W.Va., on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at 12 p.m. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Officiating will be Pastor Michael Biggs and Elder Norvel Mann. Burial will follow in Keaton Cemetery in Greenville, W.Va.

Honored pallbearers are: Stanley Elmore, Paul Elmore, Harold Ray Dickson, Harry Lee Mann, Bobby Mann, and Larry Hall.

Macil Fred Hughes

SUN HILL — Macil Fred Hughes, 91, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012, following a long illness.

Born April 12, 1921, at Sam’s Branch, he was the son of the late Addie Shannon and James J. Hughes.

Fred spent his lifetime working on his farm at Crouch’s Farm, which he truly enjoyed. He also worked for ten years at Clear Fork Coal Company, located at Toler’s Farm. Beginning in 1940, he spent two years in CC camps in Utah, building shelters and homes for soldiers and their families. Fred was a 20-year member of the Wyoming County Committee of the FHA and was a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency for 45 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Tony Hughes; a grandson, Jay Hughes; a great-granddaughter, Sarah Cline; two brothers, George and Stacey Hughes; three sisters, Bell Carter, Macie Haney and Jocie Cline; and a son-in-law, Ernest Miller.

Those left to cherish his memory are three sons, Jessie Hughes and wife, Cheri of Oceana, Frank Hughes and wife, Moncella and Mike Hughes and his wife, Sue, both of Stafford, Va.; two daughters, Yvonne Cline and husband, Bobby of Sun Hill and Francis Miller of Stafford, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Jay Blankenship officiating. Interment will follow at Jay Hughes Cemetery, Sun Hill. Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, December 12 at the funeral home.

Tom Evans, Ron Altizer, Randall Tilley, Lou Hatfield, Roger Cook, and Fred Monk will serve as pallbearers. Dave Cook will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Evert Jones

Evert Jones, 82, of Bolt, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 10, 2012,  following a sudden illness.

Born October 13, 1930, in Clarksburg, he was the son of the late David and Olive Carter Jones.

Evert was a retired well tender, last working for Dominion Resources. He was a member of the Breckenridge Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed being outside, hunting, fishing and being with his family, but dearly loved his dogs.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Myrna Lafferty Jones, his daughter, Debra Jones Morris, two sisters and three brothers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Leila Dowdy, a granddaughter,  Dana Daniel, a grandson, Evert Beckner and his wife Leslie, great-grand children, Andrew Daniel, Jacob, Ethan, and Casey Beckner, a very special friend whom he treated as his grandson Brandon Hinkle. His sisters, June Ferree and husband Denzil, and Georgia Frye, and his brother, David Jones, all of Clarksburg.

In keeping with Evert’s wishes he will be cremated.

A service celebrating Evert’s life will be held at Breckenridge Baptist Church at a later date.

GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS — Vera Juanita Russell Mize Kliewer, 84, of Green Sulphur Springs, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, December 8, 2012 following a long illness.

Born August 25, 1928, at Abraham she was the daughter of the late Overton H. and Bessie Mae Harvey Russell.

A homemaker, she had lived most of her life in Green Sulphur Springs, a member of the Apostolic Church of Auburn Hills, Mich., she loved to fish, can, read, take walks in the woods and spend time with family and friends.

Preceded in death by her first husband, George Howard Mize Jr.; one son, Michael Wayne Mize; one granddaughter, Brittany Barber Mize; six brothers and eight sisters.

Survived by her husband, Elmer Vern Kliewer of Green Sulphur Springs; seven children, Edward Lee Mize of Hillsboro, Patricia Ann Maxwell of Green Sulphur Springs, James Gregory Mize of Green Sulphur Springs, Barbara Susan Matthews of Mt. Carmel, Tenn., Carl Richard Mize of Green Sulphur Springs, Maudie Jean Gates of Lansing, Mich. and Vera June Lafferty of Rochester Hills, Mich.; 20 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, three sisters, Patricia Ruth Whittaker of Quinwood, Dicey Faye Miller of Hinton and Bessie Hilda Pritt of Grandview and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel. Burial will follow in the Halliden Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral parlors.

Charles Edgar ‘Chuck’ Lewis III

WIRTZ, Va. — Charles Edgar “Chuck” Lewis III, of Wirtz, formerly of Mullens, W.Va., departed this life Sunday evening, December 9, 2012, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va.

Born in Mullens, on December 2, 1956, he was a son of Marion Brooks Feller of Mullens,  and the late Charles E. Lewis II.

Chuck was a graduate of Mullens High School and was employed as a driver for J E Owens Trucking in Lynchburg, Va., where he won the award for top driver five years in a row.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother and step-father Marion and Jack Feller of Mulllens; his wife Sharon Meadows Lewis of Wirtz; his step-daughters Lisa Hartzell (Joe) of Ferrum, Va., Star Arthur (Jeremy) of Wirtz, and Denise St.Clair of Rocky Mount, Va.; his sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Steve Smith of Shady Spring, W.Va.; his beloved nephew and two nieces; his ten step-grandchildren and his three step-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the Roselawn Mausoleum in Princeton, W.Va., with his mother, Marion Brooks Feller, officiating. The family will receive friends at the service and requests that flowers be omitted and contributions be made to help with the funeral expenses.

GREEN CAMP — Sarah Mae Haney Smith, 74, of Green Camp, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012, in Beckley.

Sarah was born December 24, 1937, in Welch, W.Va., a daughter of Alva Mae Houck and the late Jason Haney.

She was a loving mother and a member of the Mullensville Church of God in Jesus Name.

In addition to her father, her husband Jim Smith, a son Darrell Smith, great grandson Jadon Brown preceded her in death along with four brothers Bill, Kenneth, Johnny and Dewey, two sisters Ann Akers and Rosie Smith.

Survivors include her mother Alva Houck Haney of Beckley; four sons Mike Smith of Green Camp, Jimmy (Teresa) Smith of Glen Fork, Joseph (Lisa) Smith of Ghent and Kenneth (Kim) Smith of Bedford, Va.; a daughter Diana (Jackie) Hart of Coal City; two sisters Dorothy Hamilton of Welch and Mary (Benny) Mullins of Bluefield; two brothers Howard Haney and Bobby Haney, both of Roderfield; a special friend, Rosie Sizemore of Pineville; 10 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Mullensville Church of God in Jesus Name,  with Pastor Arlis Cook and Pastor Shirley Fox officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Vivian Katherine Yost, age 84, of Raleigh, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, December 10, 2012, surrounded by her loving family, following an extended illness.

Born on December 29, 1927, in Raleigh, W.Va., she was the daughter of George Mays Sr. and Elsie Hite Mays.

She was a dedicated homemaker and a faithful member of the Raleigh Baptist Church, where she served as secretary for many years.

She was a devoted wife, loving mother and adoring grandmother. She was selfless and always placed the needs of her family first. She loved attending family reunions and had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed attending the many sporting events of her children and grandchildren, and was truly their biggest fan. She lived a beautiful life and her warm smile and contagious laughter will be missed by so many.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, George Mays Jr; sisters, Thelma Taylor, Myra Jane Shumate, and a grandson, Eric McQuillen.

Those left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband and caregiver of 65 years, Arnold Oliver Yost Sr.; daughters, Diana Hopkins, Linda McQuillen and husband, Mike; sons, John P. Yost III and wife, Delores, Arnold “Bo”  Yost and wife, Cheryl, Jeffrey Yost and wife, Tami; brothers, Harold Mays and wife, Betty, Jack Mays and wife, Margaret, Robert Mays and wife, Jeanette; sisters, Dorothy Calfee, Mary Treadway  and husband, Tommy ; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, all from the Beckley area.

Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Yost will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel, with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating, assisted by Reverend Walter Leach.

She will be laid to rest at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, W.Va., where grandsons Brandon, Jordon and Corey Yost, great-grandsons Josh Goddard, Trevor Hopkins and nephew, Thomas Treadway, will serve as pallbearers.  

 Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Shady Spring Chapel.

The family of Vivian Yost would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Southern WV, Cookie Telah, Celeste and all of those who assisted with her care during her final days.
