Pat Roger Ayers Jr.

ALDERSON — Pat Roger Ayers Jr., age 57, of Alderson, formerly of Fort Washington Forest, Md., passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., following a long illness.

Born August 5, 1955 in Ronceverte, W.Va., he was the son of Pat Rodgers Ayers of Alderson, and the late Bettie J. Vint Ayers.

Mr. Ayers was employed as a welder at JENFAB in Low Moor, Va. Prior to his employment with JENFAB, he was employed for 17 years at the David Taylor Institute of Technology Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, Md., where he was the head of the welding, fabricating and sheet metal shop. He had also worked as a high voltage electrician at Rockingham Construction in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Baker Ayers of Alderson; a daughter, Kyla Ayers of Alderson; his father, Pat Rodgers Ayers and his companion, Wanda Blagg of Alderson; two aunts, Rosa Kast and her companion, Frank Bailey, of Alderson, and Deloris Fentress of Accokeek, Md.; four uncles, John Ayers and his companion, Debbie Craft, of Alderson, Sherman Ayers and his wife, Carol Ayers, of Alderson, Gary Ayers and his companion, Linda Ayers, of Dublin, Va., and Steve Ayers and his wife, Jennifer Ayers, of Meadow Bridge, W.Va.; his father and mother-in-law, Jack and Denise Baker of Alderson; and many cousins.

Mr. Ayers was a 1973 graduate of Potomac High School in Prince George County, Md.  He attended Prince George Community College for two years and attended the Hobart School of Welding Technology in Troy, Ohio. Mr. Ayers was a member of the Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, and was a member of the Saint Columba Masonic Lodge No. 150 AF & AM in La Plata, Md. He taught new members to be Masons and was initiated as Entered Apprentice on December 22, 1992, passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft on April 6, 1993, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on June 15, 1993.   

Funeral services will be Friday, November 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson.

Friends may call Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.

Serving as pallbearers and conducting Masonic graveside rites will be the members of the Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF & AM, Alderson, W.Va.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Ayers, Camran Ayers, Clay Ayers, Sherman Ayers, Gary Ayers, Steve Ayers, Logan Ayers, Tim “Bubby” Gwinn, and Bo Baker.

Meredith Keith Blevins

CLAYTON — Meredith Keith Blevins, age 74, of Clayton, formerly of Tonawanda, N.Y., passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at his home in Clayton, following a long illness.

Bobby Ray ‘Buck’ Buckland

Bobby Ray “Buck” Buckland, 78, of Shady Spring, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer with his family by his side.

Bobby was born in Pemberton, W.Va., on Sept. 17, 1934, to the late Kermit Buckland and Mollie Loyd Buckland.

After completing his GED, he then enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served in the Vietnam War and then retired after 22 years of service. He then came home to West Virginia, where he worked a short while for Sparks TV and Appliance and Eastern Coal Company’s Affinity Mine.

Bobby then started his own business, Bucks Appliance Service, which he operated for many years. Later in life he went to work for National TV and Appliance as the warehouse manager through June of this year.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Billie, Gene and Jerry Buckland and two sisters, Katherine and Rebecca Buckland.

Those survivors left to cherish his memories are his three children: Bobby Buckland of Shady Spring, Colleen Buckland of White Oak, and Lou Ann Cook and her husband, Bob Cook of Beckley; former wife and mother of his children, Ellen Buckland of White Oak; his four grandchildren, Nicholas Buckland of Dublin, Ohio, Patrick Buckland and wife, Sarah of Pennacle, N.C., Travis Buckland of Fall River, Mass., and Leslie Cook of Beckley; one great-grandson, Patrick Buckland Jr.; his four sisters: Faye Ames of Golden, Col., Patsi Trail of Lexington, S.C., Linda Moran of Beckley, and Nancy Benge of Beckley; a brother, Jackie Buckland and wife, Barbara of Waynesville, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Betty Buckland of Crab Orchard, and Lillian Buckland of Midway. Also very dear to his heart, was his many nieces and nephews and close friends and family.

In keeping with his wishes he has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at Bible Baptist Church in MacArthur, in which he had been attending with his family. Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m., in which services will follow after.

The Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 will conduct Military Final Rites after the memorial services at the church.

Anthony Alvin Farmer

Anthony Alvin Farmer, 83, a native of Bolt, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

In honor of his wishes Alvin has been cremated.

A celebration of his life will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the Breckenridge Missionary Baptist Church in Bolt with Pastor Dewey Lowe officiating.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.  at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Alvin’s memory to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, Trap Hill –Liberty Scholarship Fund, or a charity of personal choice.

Carl Leo Garten

MEADOW BRIDGE — Carl Leo Garten, age 80, of Backus Mountain, went home to be with our Lord, on Monday, November 26, 2012, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, following a heart attack.

Born December 8, 1931, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Lewis N. and Charlotte Lottie Smith Garten.

At age 3, Carl's family moved to Backus Mtn., where he was raised.  After school, Carl moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he began work at BAJ Tool Company as a machinist and mechanic. He later returned to Backus Mountain where he worked as a mechanic for Harold Kinder, then later on became a coal miner for Helen Coal Company in Slater Hollow, and also for Royal Coal Company at Layland, where he was forced to retire due to a stroke.  Carl enjoyed fishing, hunting, and talking on his CB, where he was known as "Lazy Mountain Man." Carl loved all living creatures including birds, deer, squirrels and chipmunks. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Garten and his wife Texie and two sisters, Helen Buckland and Erma Decker.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of 45 years, Sharon Sue Garten of Backus Mountain; one daughter,  Carol Garten Stover and husband Randy of Crab Orchard; one son, Carl D. Garten of Backus Mountain; two grandsons, Joshua Graham and R.J. Stover; four great-grandchildren: Justin, Jacob, Jessica and Julie; special niece, Cathy Garten Fox and husband Curtis of Ohio; his pet dog, Blackie, and many friends and extended family.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, November 30, 2012, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Ruth Goins officiating. Burial will follow in Smith Cemetery at Backus Mountain.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m.  Thursday evening at the funeral home.  Music will be by Joanne Lester.

Pallbearers include Randy Stover, Cathy Garten-Fox, Joshua Graham, Alan Bowles, Randy Parsons, and Tony Goins.

James Edward ‘Jim’ Grow

James Edward “Jim” Grow, 88, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 28, 2012.

Born November 7, 1924, he was a son of the late Everett and Lela Pennington Grow.

Jim enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with lawnmowers and loved to roller skate. Jim has been employed with Beckley Cab Company, Modern Furniture Company, Valley Skate Center and Pikeview Manor Apartments. Jim attended the Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his wife Betty Grow.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, James Raymond Grow and wife Sherl of Beckley; daughters, Tina Pauley and husband Danny of Beckley, Carolyn Ellison and husband Hayden of Mt. Hope; grandson, Brandon Grow of Beckley and granddaughter, Kasi Pauley.

Services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Roger Tolliver officiating. Jim will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday from 10 to 12 p.m. at the funeral home.

WHITESVILLE — Lacy Lee Jarrell, 68, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012.

Anthony McDonald, 59, of Daniels, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2012,  Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Ruth Ann Meadows, age 31, of Bradley, passed away in Wytheville, Va.

Robert Algie Moore

DETROIT, Mich. — Mr. Robert Algie Moore 93, of Detroit, passed away on Friday, November 23, 2012.

Mr. Moore was born on June 10, 1919 in Mt. Airy, N.C., to the late Robert and Ethel Strickland Moore.

He was a former coal-miner in Stotesbury, W.Va., until he relocated his family to Detroit,  where he was employed by General Motors until he retired.

Mr. Moore was married to the late Montrolia DeBerry Moore and to this union was born four children.

Other than his wife and parents, Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his step-father, Mr. Charlie R. Moore, one brother, Samuel Moore, three sisters, Helen Moore, Revella Tyus, and Vergie Manning.

Mr. Moore is survived by one son and three daughters, Mr. Larry (Rita) Moore of Detroit, Elaine Isaac, Queens, N.Y.; Charlotte Moore and Cheryl (Kenneth) Kinsley of Detroit. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, one aunt, Mrs. Beatrice Flippen of New York, NY; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

The eldest of fourteen siblings, he is also survived by three brothers, JayVon Moore (Delores), Detroit, Howard Moore, Long Beach, Calif., Charles Moore (Evelyn) Laurelton, N.Y.; six sisters, Virginia Ward, Esther (Louis) Motley, Delores Robinson, all of Beckley, Inez Rochester, Spring Hills, Fla., Louise Hall, New York, Maxine (Jimmy) Motley, Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Moore was of the Baptist faith and praised God for his longevity. He was a man who loved his family, a man with such great work ethnics, one who provided well for his family, a man who had to be forced into retirement...he went until he could not go no more. He will be missed by all that love him.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the James H. Coles Funeral Home N.W. Chapel, 16100 Schaefer Highway, Detroit, Michigan 48235.

Burial will follow in Detroit Memorial Park West, Detroit.

Martha P. Powers

STUARTS DRAFT, Va. — Martha P. Powers, 75, of Stuarts Draft, passed away  Monday, November 26, 2012, at the home of her son, John, in Stuarts Draft, following a short illness.

Born September 24, 1937, at Rainelle, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Ena Belle Jeffries Cade.

Martha had retired from an electronics and telephone manufacturing company, and she loved her cats.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard F. Powers Sr., a sister, Madeline McClure, and two brothers, Raymond Shortridge and Tommy Cade.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Southard (Milton) of Stanardsville, Va.; two sons,  Bernard Powers Jr. (Helen) of Stuarts Draft, and John Powers (Penny) of Stuarts Draft; five brothers, Robert Shortridge of Hico, W.Va., Jack Cade of Rupert, W.Va., Clarence Cade of Meadow Bluff, W.Va., James Cade of Covington, Va., and Richard Cade of Artie, W.Va.; three grandchildren: Tiffany Southard, Shawn and Courtney Powers; two step grandchildren: Tony and Michael Southard; three step great-grandchildren: Michelle, Savannah, and Jonathan Southard, and one step great-great-grandchild: Seth Nelsen.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Donald Beam officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Patrick ‘Butch’ Preece

SPOKANE, Wash. — Patrick “Butch” Preece, 48, of Spokane, formerly of Verdunville,  passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012.

ROSEDALE, Va. — Nancy Louise Toler, 76, formerly of Kopperston, passed away  Tuesday, November 27, 2012.

Vera Deborah Willmott

SUMMERSVILLE — Vera Deborah Willmott, 58, of Summersville, died Monday, November 26, 2012.

In keeping with her wishes the body was cremated and there will be no services.

Evelyn Wood

Evelyn Wood, 79, a 29 year resident of Fairdale, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 25, 2012.

Mrs. Wood was proceeded in death by her parents William and Sarah Goldsmith, baby daughters Katherine and Marcella, also, daughter Charlotte Haynie and husband of 30 years George Wood.

Mrs. Wood is survived by her children in North Carolina: Dwight, Sterling, Gwynne, Theresa, Bill, Carol and Cecil Haynie, in West Virginia; her daughters with George, Dawn Wood Bradley and Bessie Brown, she also had nine step-children.

Mrs. Wood was big mama or mawmaw to 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Melton Mortuary Chapel at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 30th, 2012, with Pastor Jeff Perdue officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service.
