Thelma Gay (White) Bever

CRAIGSVILLE — Thelma Gay (White) Bever, 76, of Craigsville died Nov. 21, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in the White Funeral Home at Craigsville. Interment will follow in the Shaffer Cemetery on Creek Creek of Camden-on-Gauley. Friends may call one hour prior to the services Sunday at the funeral home in Craigsville.



Franklin O. Davis

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — Franklin O. Davis, 89, of Indian Trail, formerly of Beckley, went to Heaven to be with his wife Helen on November 19, 2013.

Born on October 4, 1924, he was the son of Gordon and Mary Davis.

Frank was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Beckley and recently a member of First Baptist Church of Matthews, N.C. He was a World War II veteran in the Navy and worked for 43 years in the coal mines.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Helen, two sons, Franklin Davis Jr. and Jeffrey Davis.

Survivors include daughter, Dinah Atkins and husband Harry of Indian Trail; son, Mike Davis and wife Elisa of Indian Trail; daughter-in-law, Mary Davis of Mabscott; grandchildren, Charles Atkins and wife Deborah of Danville, Va., Joe Rivituso and wife Jennifer of Indian Trail, Amy Hulderman and husband Brent of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Charlie and Alex Atkins, Jack and Stella Rivituso and Hailey Hulderman; one sister, Pat Caldwell and husband Curt of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, John Davis and wife June of Hico, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Joy Thomas and husband Jim; and brother-in-law Bill Taylor.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with grandson Charles Atkins officiating. Burial will be at 12 noon on Sunday, November 24, in the West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin, W.Va.

Friends may gather with the family from 5:30 to 7 p.m. prior to the service.

NIMITZ — Jane Ellen Fix, 61, of Nimitz, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.

Juanita Billings Hatcher

OAK HILL — Juanita Billings Hatcher, 91, of Oak Hill, WV, died on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.

Born November 10, 1922, at Packs Branch, WV, she was the sixth of sixteen children of the late Charley E. and Ada Bailey Billings.

She and her husband were the owners of Hatcher’s Music Store in Oak Hill.

Mrs. Hatcher was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren A. Hatcher, Jr., and thirteen brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Charles “Rusty” Hatcher and his wife, Louise, of Lewisburg; daughter, Marjorie Davis of Oak Hill; stepdaughter, Judy Arrington and her husband, Jim, of Tampa, FL; and Jacob Hanson her “special” great-grandson of Oak Hill.

She is also survived by her brothers, Harold Billings and wife, Barbara, of Delaware, OH, Bobby Billings and wife, Rosetta, of Custer Park, Ill; sisters-in-law, Anita Billings of Cary, NC, and Doris Billings  of Winston-Salem, NC; six grandchildren, Susie Logsdon, Christina Hatcher, Charles W. Hatcher, Jr., Jimmie Hatcher, Amanda Davis and Joseph Davis; fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private.

Dorothy M. Holliday

Dorothy Margaret Holliday passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at the Plateau Medical Center at the age of 91.

Born May 20th, 1922, at Edmond, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Stella Norman Syner.

She was a resident of Fayetteville for 31 years and a prior resident of Layland for 35 years.

Dorothy graduated from Nuttall High School in 1942, and was postmaster at Nuttleburg for a short while. During WWII, she worked as a war bond typist for the U.S. government in Elkton, MD. She served as a post office clerk for 17 years and later as postmaster at Layland.

A former member of Layland Baptist Church and a current member of Lansing Baptist Church, Dorothy taught youth groups, children’s Sunday school classes, directed plays and served in several positions, including president of the Ladies Mission Circle. She taught the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class at Lansing Baptist Church until ill health forced her to resign at the age of 81.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Guy S. Holliday, in 1979, and a son, Noah Daniel Holliday, in 1953. She was the last surviving member of her family. Preceding her in death were four sisters, Freda Argabright, Katherine Argabright, Wilda Entsmiger and Annie Coy, and four brothers, William, Earl, Clifford, and Noah Syner.

Surviving are her children, Patricia Overholser (Dan) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Guy S. Holliday Jr. (Jessica) of Forest Hill, Daphina Jean Facello of Maple Fork and George S. Holliday of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Dwayne Meadows, Sabrina Harrison, Opal Lively, Guy Holliday III, Teresa Holliday, James Shanda Hutchison and Dr. David Facello, and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 24th, at 2 p.m. at Lansing Baptist Church with Rev. James S. Hutchison officiating. Burial will follow at Nuttall Cemetery, Edmond. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the services at the church.

Betty Jean Hubbard

Betty Jean Hubbard, 82, of Beckley died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Gladys Virginia Spangler Humphreys, 94, of Blacksburg, Va., passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.

David ‘Junior’ McKinney

David “Junior” McKinney, 78, of Stephenson, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Ardeth Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at the Acord Cemetery at Acord Mountain. Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time Sunday.

Louise Annie Milam

Louise Annie Milam, 71, of Beckley went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Born July 23, 1942, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Stanley Milam.

Louise enjoyed working puzzles, making hookrugs and attending church. She was a member of the Glen White Church of God.

In addition to her parents, Louise is preceded in death by the brothers, Leonard Arthur and Glennis Blane Milam.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Patricia Lilly of Beckley; nephew, John Roberts and wife Nellie of Beckley; nieces, Savannah Roberts, Felicia Moerke and Tiffany Moerke all of Beckley.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Jesse Farley officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Luvena ‘Sally’ Nettleton

VICTOR — Luvena “Sally” Nettleton, 72, of Victor left this world on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Luvena was born November 1, 1941, at Graydon and was the daughter of the late William Columbia and Margie Belle Ellison Willis. She served in the U.S. Army, a member of the Victory Independent Baptist Church at Victor and was retired from the Social Security Administration.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy Curtis Nettleton on July 17, 2009, and 2 brothers Larry and Bill Willis.

Surviving are 2 sons Michael Allen Nettleton and wife Kelly of Ripley and Mark Arthur Nettleton and wife April of Culloden; 4 sisters Lois Yancey of New Waverly, Texas, Geraldine Hall of Mechanicsville, VA, Frances Clark of Ansted and Patsy Coppins of Richmond, VA; 1 brother Roger Willis of Ansted and 3 Grandchildren Nicholas Nettleton, Jessica Nettleton and Emma Runion.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 25, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted with Pastor Tony Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Willis Cemetery at Victor. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home.

Mary F. Perry

MOUNT HOPE — Mary Frances Stone Perry, 86, of Mount Hope, WV, died Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, WV.

Born December 17, 1926, at Kilsyth, WV, she was the oldest daughter of the late Clarence Mahlon and Blanche Lee Farrish Stone.

She was retired from the Fayette County Board of Education as a school teacher from Mount Hope Elementary School and was a former store clerk for the New River Company at the Kilsyth and Mount Hope stores. There was nothing that pleased her more than to see her former students and hear of their accomplishments in life!

She attended the Kilsyth and Oswald Elementary Schools and graduated from Mount Hope High School in 1944; was a graduate of Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, TN, and Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV.

Mary was a member of the Kilsyth Free Will Baptist Church since Easter Sunday 1947. She was active in the church, as a past president and member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the church, taught Sunday School for over 40 years, served as Choir Director and a member of the Adult Choir, and directed the VBS program for many years. She served as a past president and past secretary of the West Virginia State Ladies Auxiliary of Free Will Baptists. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Winolia Chapter No. 59, Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Hope; the West Virginia and Fayette County Association of Retired School Employees and was a member of the former Suburban Homemakers Club in Bradley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray C. Perry, on January 28, 1978; one sister, Betty Lou Stone; and three brothers, Cledith Stone, Ernie Stone and Todd Stone.

Survivors include her son, Ronnie Perry of Mount Hope; two sisters, Pat Renfro of Maple Fork, WV, and Freda Lee Cincinnati of Boomer, WV; two brothers, Jack Stone of Holden, WV, and Jim Stone of Bluefield, WV; caregiver and niece, Ginny Deal Price; and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be on Monday, November 25, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Jim Sturgill and Rev. Dana Gatewood officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home at Mount Hope on Sunday, November 24, 2013, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Mary’s family would like to express their deep appreciation for the care she received on 4 South at Raleigh General Hospital and at Bowers Hospice House.

Bill Pritchard

Bill Pritchard, age 85, of Beckley, WV, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at the Beckley VA Medical Center.

Born on February 26, 1928, at Sprague, WV, he was the son of the late Jack Gaither Pritchard and Goldie Retha Wills Pritchard.

Mr. Pritchard was a retired manager for Pepsi Cola  Distributing Company at Mabscott, was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during WWII, and was a member of the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Haynes, Betty Duncan, and Wanda Ritch, by a half brother, Tom Watson Pritchard, and a half sister Ada “Sis” Meadows, by brothers-in law, J.D. Johnson, Bob Duncan, and Guy Haynes.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Betty Phillips Pritchard.

His daughter, Barbara Pritchard Dunbar and her husband Jerry of Beckley.

His son, Bill J. Pritchard and his wife Rebecca St. John Pritchard of Beckley.

Brothers, Jack Pritchard Jr. and his wife Wanda of Granite Falls, NC, Curtis Pritchard and his wife Mina, of Lenoir, NC, and Tommy Pritchard and his wife Thelma of Lenoir, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church on Monday, November 25, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Wayne Peters and Pastor Daniel Legg officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews, Bill J. Pritchard Jr., J.W. Dunbar, Jacob D. Fink, Derick Powers, Randy Phillips, and Donald Phillips.

LEWISBURG — Donald K. Samples, 72, of Lewisburg died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013.

Charlotte Ann Shuttlesworth

RICHWOOD — Charlotte Ann Shuttlesworth, 67, of Richwood, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Summersville Regional Medical Center, Summersville, WV, after a short illness.

She was born on August 24, 1946, in Richwood, WV, to Maxine Whitis Harrison and the late Ralph Harrison.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Richwood, WV.

She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister.

She was on the social committee at her church; she was a true Christian lady.

She was a wonderful friend to all and always had a smile on her face.

She never met a stranger.

She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include Husband, John W. Shuttlesworth, Jr., Richwood, WV; Son, John W. “Billy” Shuttlesworth, III, Richwood, WV; Mother, Maxine Harrison, Summersville, WV; Sister, Shirley Harrison, Craigsville, WV; Patty and husband, David Graf, FL.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Eugene Smith

RICHWOOD — Charles “Chuck” Eugene Smith, 49, of Richwood, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013.

Graveside service will be at noon Saturday, Nov. 23, at Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood, with Pastor John Reed officiating. Interment is in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood.

Adam Richard Walker

EBENSBURG, Pa. — Adam Richard Walker, of Ebensburg, passed away suddenly November 21, 2013, at the much too short lived 41 years of age.

Born May 11, 1972, at Travis AFB, California, to Thomas H. and Darlene Walker.

He will be survived through his parents, of Ebensburg; his son, Tarryn and daughter Brynne of Oak Hill, West Virginia; his sister: Kristy (John) MacDonald, Manchester, New Hampshire; and brother: Jamie (Mary) Walker of Revloc.

Adam had worked as a telephone counselor for the PA Unemployment Office, as a certified nurse aide at Laurel Crest Manor and Laurelwood Convalescent Center and as an EMT at Conemaugh Hospital, the Ebensburg and Cresson Ambulance Associations and a paramedic at the Jan Care Ambulance of South West Virginia. He was a member of Holy Name Parish and a founding member of the church’s APEX Youth Group. Adam had enjoyed volunteering as a counselor after being a camper at Camp Crestfield, at Slippery Rock University, a camp for children with diabetes. He had been active in Renaissance Fairs and was a member of SCA.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. Brian Warcola officiating. Interment will follow the service at Holy Name Cemetery.
