Phyllis Acosta

Phyllis Acosta, 59, of New Richmond, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., departed this world Wednesday, January 16, 2013.

She preceded in death by her parents, Abbot Dallam Yopp and Florice Baker Yopp; also brothers Sammy Osby Yopp and Melvin Mitchell Yopp.

She leaves behind her husband Michael Acosta, sister Alpha Yopp, brother Kermit Baker, sons Paul Bryan McCracken, Christopher Arboleda and Tristen Johnathan Teamer.

Memorial service to be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at the Community Church of New Richmond.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Blondine L. Bickford Teubert Epling, 89, of Orlando, a native of Page, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Visitation will be held on Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Bonnie Carr Estes

DUNKIRK, Md. — Bonnie Carr Estes, 86, of Dunkirk, formerly of Sewell Mountain, Rainelle, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 26, at Smathers Funeral Chapel.

Friends may call two hours before the service from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bertha Lucille Fox

QUINWOOD — Bertha Lucille Fox, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Heartland of Rainelle.

She was born July 9, 1921, at Greenwood Mountain, in Summers County, and moved to Quinwood when she was three months old. Lucille was the daughter of the late John Weaver and Goldie Faye Boone Pomeroy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Albert Fox Sr. who passed away in June of 1985; two sons, Howard A. Fox Jr. in November of 2011, and her youngest son, Charles Eugene Fox in April of 2006.

She was the last charter member of the First Baptist Church of Quinwood, having begun attending church as a small child in the Chapel car, established by Rev. and Mrs. Newton. She lived her entire life in Quinwood and always had special memories to relate about her life there.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Perdue of Tampa, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Peggy Fox of Quinwood; five grandchildren, Tracy Giovo of Tampa, Fla., Jim Fox of Quinwood, Steven Fox and wife, Jessica of Quinwood, Heather Dameron of North Carolina and Amber Stevens of Virginia, and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at The First Baptist Church of Quinwood, with Pastor Chad Rodes officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call from 6  to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, Jan. 24, 2013, at Wallace &  Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Doris Elaine Garten

HINTON — Doris Elaine Garten, 85, Hinton, died Friday, January 18, 2013, at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston, following a short illness.

Born August 9, 1927, in Bluefield, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Violet Morris Bradley.

Ms. Garten was a 1944 graduate of Beaver High School in Bluefield and a graduate of Concord College in Athens. She was a retired school teacher for the Summers County Board of Education having taught for 34 years. She was also the high school girls’ basketball coach at Hinton High School for 30 years.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hinton. After retirement, she and her late husband, Bill spent many wonderful years golfing almost daily at Willowwood Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Garten. Also preceded by a brother, Lawrence “Burr Head” Bradley.

Survivors include a son, William L. Garten Jr. & wife Luci of Nashville, TN. One daughter, Sally Garten Willey & husband Steve of Hinton. One granddaughter, Lacy Garten.  A nephew, Larry Bradley of Hinton and a niece, Kay Dudley of Bluefield, VA.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Hinton, with Rev. Barbara Romfo officiating. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Garten Scholarship Fund, C/O City National Bank, Hinton, WV.

OCALA, Fla. — Charlene Gwinn, 76, of Ocala, formerly of Rainelle, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 at her home.

Born February 28, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Henry Charles and Flora Ione Stone Schultz.

Charlene was a registered nurse and homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter Deborah Rochelle Braun and her sister Barbara LaCroix.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Lonnie Gwinn; two sons Ronald Charles Kuhn and wife Laurie of Kansas City, Missouri and Kenneth Shawn Wilson and wife Regina of Elk City, Oklahoma; two daughters Christian “Kim” Zane of Pikeville, Kentucky and Chash Giovenco and husband Mark of Toms River, New Jersey; two stepsons Alan Gwinn and wife Amber of Haines City, Florida and Brian Gwinn and wife Melba of San Francisco, California; one sister Yvonne Cole of Excelsior Springs, Missouri and 13 grandchildren.

Friends may call Thursday, January 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smathers Funeral Chapel with a service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville on Friday, January 25, at 1 p.m.

Paul McGhee

On Monday, January 21st, 2013, our most cherished, Paul McGhee of the Purity Hill community at Eccles, passed away at the Plateau Medical Center, following a long illness. He was in his 74th year.

The fourth of eight children, Paul Lee McGhee was born on April 1st, 1938, at Eccles, where he has been a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Henry Bea and Delia Davis McGhee. A brother, Samuel and a sister, Jeletta Smith has preceded him in death.

Paul was a 1956 graduate of Trap Hill High School. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army where he was a medic. On Sept. 5, 1959, he married his childhood sweetheart, Evelyn Blaylock. Paul and Evelyn have shared 53 years of marriage. To this union was born a daughter, Della and a son, Steven. Paul and Evelyn have been blessed. Della is married to Kenny Tolliver and they make their home in Bolt, Steven is married to Cindy and they reside in Prosperity. Paul was the proud “Grandpa” of Samuel and his wife Gina McGhee, Courtney Parker and her husband, Ben, Gregory and Autumn Tolliver. There are two great-grand children, Samantha and James. 

An optician by trade, Paul began his career 54 years ago with Phillips Opticians. Over the past 20 years, Paul was the owner and operator of McGhee Optical on Johnstown Road. In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening, woodworking and just being with his family. Paul worshiped at the Eccles Community Church. He was concerned about chemical pollution and was involved in helping the folks of the Tank Branch and Minden communities with environmental issues. Being a veteran, Paul had a great concern for Vietnam vets.

Paul was the dear brother of Henry McGhee and his wife, Nellie of Beckley, Harold McGhee of Rural Retreat, Va., Edith Posey of Mechanicsville, Md., Ida Armstrong of Spotsylvania, Va., Goldie Brouse of Harper Heights; he was the fond brother-in-law of Providence McGhee of Aguadella, Puerto Rico; Paul was fortunate to have his extended family, the Blaylocks, Lillian “Corky” Sellards and her husband, Rev. Carl and Lilly “Cookie” Pegram and her husband, Jerry; there are several nieces and nephews and host of friends, among them a special neighbor, Teddy Richardson.

On Friday, January 25th, at 1 p.m. we will remember the life of Paul McGhee with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastors, Dewey Lowe and Kelly Gowen will be officiating.  Paul will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Friday.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. 

And now, we must say goodbye to this dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. “You were too much loved to ever be forgotten.”

BUD — Merle McKinney, 89, of Bud, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Wyoming Nursing and Rehab Center, New Richmond following a long illness.

Douglas Wayne Mills

Douglas Wayne Mills, 65, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center, following a sudden illness.

Born September 10, 1947, in Slab Fork, W.Va., to the late Winston and Virginia Brewer Mills.

Mr. Mills was a graduate of Sophia High School Class of 1965. Following high school he then received his education from Beckley College, Morris Harvey College, and LSU College of Banking. He was well known from being employed with Raleigh County National Bank and United Bank in Beckley. He also served our country in the United States Army.

Those surviving include his loving wife of 42 years, Mrs. Rebecca Beaver Mills, at home; son, Jeffry Mills (Janet) of Louisville, Ky.; daughter, Sara DeBorde (Damon) of Lexington, Ky.; sisters, Audrey Daniels of Daniels, Nancy Gilbert (Ronnie) of Fort Worth, Texas, Shirley Young (Butch) of Cool Ridge, and Rose Stewart (Doug) of Florida; grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan Mills and Violet DeBorde; close family friend, Mike Farris of Beckley; a special nephew, Cole Cross of Beckley, along with many other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2013, at St. Mary’s United Methodist Church, on South Kanawha Street in Beckley, with Dr. Sharon Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held the same afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church.

Jack Mosley

Ralph Jack Mosley, 76, of Meadow Place, Holly Hills Community and Buckeye, Ariz., died Sunday, January 20th, 2013.

William George Roman

William George Roman, age 83 of Bradley, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House, following a long illness.

Born on February 20, 1929, at Sanger, W.Va., to the late Mike and Rosa Benis Roman.

Mr. Roman was an United States Army veteran who served during the Korean War Conflict. After serving his country he was a welder by trade and worked for the Beckley Water Company until he became disabled. He was a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He enjoyed the outdoors and working on anything mechanical. He was also of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Idore, John, Harry, and Joe Roman; sisters, Annie Roman Crouch and Mattie Roman Smith; and his dog of 17 years, Spike.

Those surviving include his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Hazel Evans Roman, at home; daughters, Ellen Roman Moore (Calvin) of Mt. Hope, Karen Roman Small (John) of Bradley; sister, Dorothy Roman Clay of Easton, Pa.; two grandchildren, Michael Moore (Jaime) of Clemmons, N.C., and Kira Small of Bradley; and an abundance of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2013, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, with Pastor Gene Evans officiating, and military graveside rites being conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110. Interment will then follow in the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family would like to express gratitude to the nurses and doctors on the third and sixth floor who took such good care of Mr. Roman during his many stays at the Beckley VA Medical Center. Also a special thanks to the wonderful caring nurses at Bowers Hospice House for their tender loving care.

Mary ‘Maggie’  Wriston

Mary “Maggie” Wriston, 87, of Whitesville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Sylvester Church of God, Sylvester, with Bishop Ricky Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Mordue Cemetery, Whitesville.

Arvella Jean Wyant

Rev. 21:4, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things have passed away.”

Arvella (Jean) Wyant, 68, of Pipestem, W.Va., entered into the gates of Heaven at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at home with her loving family by her side, after a long illness.

Born June 3, 1944 at Richwood, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Okey and Gladys McCartney Weese.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eldon Weese; sisters, Polly Weese Lester Barr and Susan Weese Meadows. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 45 years, Lawrence Wyant; one daughter, Teresa Midkiff and fiance’ Lee Vanstavern of Pipestem. Jean was also the proud “MawMaw” of Danielle Marie Midkiff of Pipestem. Danielle was the joy of her Mawmaw’s life. Brother in law, David Wyant and wife Linda of Lewisburg, W.Va. Sister in law, Jane Weese of Pennsylvania. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Dr. Roy Carter and Chase Whitten officiating. Interment will follow at Valley View Memorial Cemetery on Powleys Creek.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home and one hour prior to service on Friday at the funeral home.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

Our special thanks to Hospice of Southern WV and the Bowers Hospice House of Beckley for their help, love, understanding and care for Jean. Thanks also to the special caregivers and nurses that came in to help with Jean.
