Ernestine Bragg

HINTON — Ernestine Bragg, 72, of Hinton, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at Grand Strand Regional Hospital Myrtle Beach, S.C., following a sudden illness.

Born June 20, 1940 at Lillybrook, she was as daughter of the late Earsel Lytton Sr. and Ruby Pearl Basham Lytton.

Ernestine was a homemaker who lived most of her life in Summers County. She attended Princewick Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Alden Bragg; one brother, Glen Lytton and one sister, Joy Lytton Hughes.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Thomas Lewis Bragg and wife Dorothy of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Timothy L. Bragg of Hinton; four grandchildren, Timothy Tyler and Hunter Lane Bragg of Hinton, Ashley Dawn Bourgios of Hinton and Kimberly Ann Buckland of Beckley; three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Mallory and Levi of Beckley; two brothers, Marshall Lytton and wife Gaye of Princewick and Earsel Lytton Jr. and wife Eunis of  Goldsboro, N.C.; one sister, Jeanette Thompson and husband Ronald of Michigan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, with Pastor Ronnie Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral parlors.

Pallbearers will be Dwayne Bowles, Hubert Blevins, Tommy Williams, Zach Duke, Tony Reed and John Cooper.

OAK HILL — Mr. Robert Collins Jr., of Oak Hill, died Saturday, January 19, 2013.  

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2013, at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Outreach for Christ, 135 South Court Street, Fayetteville, with Rev. Homer Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, W.Va.

Angel Diamond Keaton

OAK HILL — Angel Diamond Keaton of Oak Hill, went to Heaven Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.

She was the daughter of Chad Virgil Keaton and Lora Danielle McGuire.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Danny McGuire.

Angel will live on in the hearts of her parents, Chad and Danielle, maternal grandmother, Drema Dotson of Oak Hill, paternal grandfather, George Keaton of Kentucky, and paternal grandmother, Betty Boggess of West Virginia.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street in Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, with Pastor Randy McGuire officiating, and where the family will receive friends and family from 12 noon until time of  the service. Angel will be interred in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Janet Lynn Lewis, age 55, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Thomas Lee Maddy

ANSTED — Thomas Lee Maddy, 74, of Ansted, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, following a short illness.

He was born May 20, 1938 in Summers County, W.Va. He was the son of the late James Maddy.

Thomas was a lifetime member of N.R.A. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother-in-law.

Survivors are his loving wife of 48 years, Ella Warren Maddy; a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Chad Bennett of Russellville; one grandchild, Justin Thomas Maddy; sister-in-law, Joyce Eades her husband, Richard and their family of Ansted; brother-in-law, Robert Warren, his wife Judy and their family of Ansted.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Pastors Jack and Doug Eades officiating.  Entombment will follow at the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum in Victor.

Ernest Arthur ‘Jim’ Martin Sr.

TALCOTT — Ernest Arthur (Jim) Martin Sr., died peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Jim was born on July 18, 1925 in Marie, W.Va., to Arthur W. and Bessie Mitchell Martin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Ernest (Ernie) A. Martin Jr., siblings: Howard Martin, Emmett Martin, Glendora Jones, Gladys Meadows, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Catharine (Gracie) Hill Glass.

Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret (Chick) Glass Martin at home; daughter-in-law, Beckie of Palmyra, Va.; Grandson, Chris, his wife Tracey and step son, Alec of Poquoson, Va.; and Grandson, Kevin of Palmyra, Va. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jim enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and went into active duty in October 1943 at the age of 18, and served  in the Pacific Theater as a United States Navy Armed Guard from 1944 to 1946.

After the War, he worked for the coal mines as a machinery repairman, when he was also called to preach. He was the pastor of Rupert Missionary Baptist Church from 1965 to 1996. While in Rupert, he built a parsonage, with the help of other church members. After retirement, and moving back to Talcott, W.Va., he and Chick became members of Rollynsburg Baptist Church. He would occasionally fill in when needed. He loved the Lord and was the happiest when he was able to stand in the pulpit.

In his spare time, he pursued carpentry, hunting, and fishing. Jim also looked forward each year when it was time to plant his garden. There was always an abundant supply of tomatoes, corn and potatoes to mention a few of his crops.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Rollynsburg Baptist Church at Talcott, with Pastor Dana Stalnaker officiating. A private burial will follow in the Talcott Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rollynsburg Baptist Church and one hour prior to services Thursday.

Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.

Flowers will gratefully be accepted, however, those wishing to may make donations to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you, first to Jim’s caretakers while he was home, Jennifer Rookstool and Rena Thompson and the nursing staff, and Dr. Chhabra at the Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Services.

Lydia Alderson Preston

LEWISBURG — Lydia Alderson Preston, 97, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, at her home in Lewisburg, following a long illness.

Mrs. Preston was born in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of George Price Alderson and Lydia Comstock Alderson. She attended Gunston Hall College in Washington, D.C. and after graduation worked as a fashion model in New York City. She was married to the late Col. William Montgomery Preston, also of Lewisburg. After Col. Preston retired from the Army in 1967, the couple lived for more than 20 years in Washington, D.C. where they pursued an eclectic range of mutual interests, from historic preservation to the decorative and performing arts.

Mrs. Preston was a partner in the public relations firm LRPR, which focused on promoting non-profit and cultural organizations. She was a supporter of The Diplomatic Hospitality and Information Service, a member of the International Fashion Group, the Textile Museum Advisory Board, the Sulgrave Club and the Colonial Dames of America. She was a voracious reader and traveler, a generous hostess, avid sports fan, and a passionate lifelong lover of ballet, music and theatre. She was cherished by her family and many friends for her originality, boundless curiosity and irrepressible enthusiasm.  

Survivors include her daughters, Lydia Preston Hicks of Lewisburg and Elizabeth Montgomery Preston of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandsons William Preston Hicks and Blair Montgomery Hicks of Alexandria, Va.; nephews George Coleman Alderson of Walkertown, N.C. and Thomas Kearns of Marietta, Ga., niece Laura Kearns of Decatur, Ga.; and four grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, following private interment at Stuart Manor Cemetery.

The family suggests donations be made to Hospice Care, 223 Maplewood Ave, Lewisburg, WV 24901.

Donetta Royal

FAYETTEVILLE — Donetta Rea Royal, 66, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born on July 6, 1946 in Grayson County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late James and Virginia Hardin.

Mrs. Royal was a supervisor for ARA Services.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Casey Royal; brother, James Hardin; and sister, Delberta Hardin.

Left to cherish her memory include her husband, Clifford Royal; three sons, Joseph (Maryanne) Royal, Wesly (Cheryl) Royal, and Stephen (Tammy) Royal; nine grandchildren: Joseph Royal Jr., Jessica Mahoney, Jeffrey Royal, John Royal, Jessica Parrill, Levi Burgess, Larid Price, Anthony Royal, and Regina Royal; two great-grandsons:  Wyatt Royal and Kaegan Mahoney; and two brothers: Ronald Wilson and Charles Hardin.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Paul Neal officiating. At her request, she will be cremated following service.

Larry Edward Short

FAYETTEVILLE — Larry Edward Short, of Fayetteville, passed and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 20, 2013, after a long illness surrounded by his family.

Larry was born on July 12, 1937, in Kayford, West Virginia. A graduate of East Bank High School, he was an avid baseball and football player. Larry met Judy while she was still in high school and they were marred and lived in West Virginia, Conneticut, and had their final careers in Palm Beach County, Fla. In 2000, they returned to West Virginia, making Fayetteville their final retirement location.

Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Judy Short; his daughters: Vickie (and her husband and wonderful son-in-law) Reinie Wendt; granddaughter, Nicole Schumacher (who is married to Robert Schumacher) and Layla Schumacher, his great granddaughter; his daughter, Kelly Short and her children/grandsons, Clark and Grant Poston of Vermont.

Larry is also survived by his sister, Mary Short Agardi and husband, George of Midlands, N.C., and many loving nieces and nephews.

Larry loved hunting, fishing and anything outdoors his entire life. He had life-long friends and was always willing to lend a hand when he could. His friendships could be witnessed by their duration and loyalty. Larry loved his family immensely and was happiest when everyone could be with him. He loved to sit and listen to Judy play the piano and keyboard.

This strong, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend will be missed terribly.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, with Pastor David Sneed and Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Teddy S. Stone

MOUNT HOPE — Teddy S. Stone, 83, of Mount Hope, died on Monday, January 21, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, following a long illness

Born September 9, 1929, at Kilsyth, W.Va., he was the son of the late Seibert R. and Kathryn Bridgette Stone.

Mr. Stone was retired as a CPO E7 from the US Navy after having served in the Korean Conflict and VietNam. He also retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Beckley.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathryn Ann Stone and Marsha Wiley; a son, David Franklin; and two sisters, Sarah Jane Voiers and Jean West.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Plateau Medical Center for their care.

Survivors include his wife, Mae E. Massey Stone; two sons, Teddy Ray Stone of Omaha, Neb. and Jackie Stone of Ohio; three daughters, Janie Morris of Mount Hope, Pam Hylton, Mount Hope, and Lisa Williams and husband, Fred of Glen Jean; one brother, Denny R. Stone of Stanaford and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Rev. Carlyle Blomme officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Ronald G. Vest

HINTON — Ronald G. Vest, 86, of Hinton, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at Summers County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale, following a long illness.

Born December 21, 1926 at Summers County, he was a son of the late Green Hamilton and Roxie Bennett Vest.

Ronald was a member of the First Christian Church in Hinton, where he served as an Elder. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII and was a retired Conductor for C&O after 40 plus years of services, retiring in 1984. He was a loving father, grandfather and an avid hunter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Kessler Vest on September 24, 2002; one son, Larry Vest in August of 2009; six brothers, Bryn, Atle, Dewey, Bob, Frank and Charles; seven sisters, Bessie, Dela, Eblyn, Flora, Orva, Thelma and Ethel.

Those left to cherish his memory include three sons, Ronald Vest and wife Becky of Prince George, Va., Gary Vest and wife Debby of Gratis, Ohio, David Carson and wife Andrea of Trenton, Ohio and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors, with Minister Gary Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Ballengee.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral parlors.
