Margie Marie Vaughan Thomas Cook

JESSE — Margie Marie Vaughan Thomas Cook, 78, went to be with the angels Thursday, January 17, 2013, following a sudden illness.

Born July 29, 1934, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Green and Myrtle Suttles Vaughan.

Margie enjoyed traveling, cooking on Sunday for her family, having a good time with her friends, and being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She attended Indian Creek Community Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Leroy Thomas and Willis Cook; one son, Roger Thomas; a great-grandson, Zachary Clay; and several brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Gordon Thomas and wife, Tammy, of Lynchburg, VA; three daughters, Carolyn Steele and husband, Tommy, of Lynco, Connie Deel of Beckley and Cindy Clay of Pineville; two brothers, Frank Vaughan of Goshen, IN, and Billy Ray Vaughan of Seattle, WA; a sister, Emilene Sparks of Pineville; eleven grandchildren, Sabrina Richardson, Christy Laxton, Rickey Clay, Jennifer Deel, Tee Jaye Thomas, Kevin Steele, Robert Clay, Dale Thomas, Danielle Larkins, Kaitlyn Thomas, and Emilee Thomas; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Margie’s life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Scott Cline officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Family Cemetery, Briar Creek. The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Betty Plumley Dick

Betty Plumley Dick, age 72, of Shady Spring, passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013.

Born at Pear, W.Va., on March 27, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Lester Plumley and Leona Bennett Plumley.

Mrs. Dick was a homemaker, and a member of the New Salem Baptist Church at Abraham. She had made her home at Shady Spring for the past 17 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Greer.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband, Thomas Dick.

A son, Timothy Grant Dick and his wife Shari of Daniels. A daughter, Julie Ann Devericks and her husband Duane of Shady Spring.

A brother Lester Plumley Jr. of Abraham.

Three sisters, Jeanetta Tincher of Florida, Vera Copeland of Litchfield, Ohio, and Arlena Spangler of Plainfield, Ind. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Betty Dick on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Eddie McNeely officiating. Burial will follow at the Washington Plumley Cemetery at Plumley Mountain.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

DAWSON — Delores Kathryn Fleshman, 62, of Dawson, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.

Jack L. Hall

WAITEVILLE — Jack L. Hall, 86, of Waiteville, WV, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013, at his home following a long illness.

He was born at Pageton, WV, January 17, 192, a son of the late John Allen and Katherine McCormick Hall.

Mr. Hall was a farmer, part-time postmaster and owner of Hall’s Supply at Waiteville. He was also a 50-year member of Monroe Lodge #77 AF & AM at Union, the Beni Kedem Shrine at Charleston, and the Giles County Shine Club at Pearisburg, Va., and a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Zion Union Church Cemetery and he was affiliated with the New Zion Union Church at Waiteville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Humphreys Hall; a daughter, Patricia Hall; a brother, Jimmy Hall; and an infant sister.

Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda Hall of Union; 2 sons, Roger Hall of Waiteville, Bobby Hall and wife, Vicki, of Waiteville; a sister, Helen Guy of Union; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with Revs. Bob Ratliff and Larry Dunbar officiating. Burial will follow at the New Zion Union Church Cemetery at Waiteville.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Masonic Graveside Rites will be conducted by Monroe Lodge # 77 AF & AM.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice, 223 Maplewood Ave., Lewisburg, WV 24901.

Evelyn Kay Reid McGuffin

OAK HILL — Evelyn Kay Reid McGuffin, 91, of Oak Hill, WV, died on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.

Born December 3, 1921, at Scarbro, WV, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lula Smith Reid.

Mrs. McGuffin was a member of the Lochgelly Baptist Church.

Like millions of woman of her generation she worked during World War II. Initially as a shipyard worker in Groton, CN; helping to build submarines and at Swan Island, WA, building Liberty ships. She became an electric welder and riveter. By war’s end she was a master welder teaching men how to weld.

She was a homemaker and resided in Oak Hill most of her life following the war.

Her husband, Edward C. McGuffin, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Michael McGuffin and his wife, Marilyn, of Charleston, and by one niece and two nephews.

Graveside rites and committal services will be on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at 1:15 p.m. at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with a eulogy by her son, Michael McGuffin, officiating. Burial will follow.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Evelyn’s memory to the charity of your choice.

Shirley Ann Minor

Shirley Ann Minor, 69, of Beckley, West Virginia, experienced the most glorious day of her life on Thursday, January 17th, 2013. She looked upon the face of her savior Jesus Christ as He led her by the hand into the Promised Land.

Shirley was born on March 5th, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Peter and Mary Strader. She was also preceded in death by her husband James Clifford Minor; two sons Frank Jensen and James Minor Jr.; one beloved grandson Christopher Wise; three brothers Jerry, Mike, and Pete Strader; and one sister Elizabeth Mench. Shirley was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Those left to cherish her in adoring remembrance include two daughters Charlotte (Curt) Slotta of Prescott, MI, and Pheobe (Timothy) Wise of Daniels, WV; three sons Amos (Lisa) Minor of Fireco, WV, Pete (Debbie) Minor of Beckley, WV, and Billy (Tina) Minor of Scarbro, WV; 20 grandchildren and one special adopted granddaughter who all treasured her as the strongest woman they’ve ever known; 15 great-grandchildren; and one very special friend Estelle Barber whom she very fondly referred to as “Mom.”

Shirley was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy located in Oak Hill/Victor, WV, where she enjoyed lifting heartfelt praise to the Lord and spending time in intimate fellowship alongside her beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. She resided at Manor House Apartments where one or her greatest joys was spending time with all of her friends. She enjoyed playing bingo, crafting, crocheting, riding her scooter, and watching SpongeBob with her youngest granddaughter Kayla.

As one of her dear friends once said of Shirley, “To know her was to love her.” Her life reflected that love, most especially in her unconditional devotion to her children and grandchildren.

The family wishes to give special thanks to: RCCOA, Dr. Joseph Golden and staff, Dr. Rajan and Marlena, WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital and staff, PCH Home Health, Trudy Wardensky at Manor House, and many others who are too numerous to mention by name who were actively involved in caring for her. Of special mention are her devoted care-givers Tasha Frederick and her “adopted daughter” Hope Kessler, both of whom she loved very much.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel on Monday, January 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. with her daughter-in-law Pastor Debbe Minor officiating, assisted by Rev. Jimmie Blevins. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, WV. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Denise E. Nary

Denise Elaine Nary of Beckley died Sunday, January 13th, 2013, at her home following a long illness. She was 50 years of age.

One of three children and the only daughter, Denise was born on March 22nd, 1962, at Portsmouth, Virginia.

Denise leaves to cherish her memory her beloved father, Danny Nary of Mabscott, and the late Shirley Elaine Ferguson Nary. In addition to her mother, Denise was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, David and Inez Nary, and maternal grandparents, Orville and Annamae Ferguson.

Denise is the dear sister of Danny Nary Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Beckley and David A. Nary of Surveyor; she was the sweet aunt of Katie Nary of Beckley, Takayla Nary of Surveyor, and Jennifer Stone and her husband, Eric, of Russellville, Kentucky; and her companion, Tony Wright, survives also.

In keeping with her wishes Denise has been cremated. A Memorial Service to remember her life will be Sunday, January 20th, at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.

Margaret Anne Yelton Walsh Nix

OAK HILL — Margaret Anne Yelton Walsh Nix, 82, of Oak Hill, WV, died on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV.

Born July 6, 1930, at Butler, KY, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Zola Blanche Hodge Yelton.

Margaret was a retired bus driver for the Fayette County Commission on Aging, co-owner of Mob’s TV Service and a former employee of Woolworth and former manager for the WV ABC Commission.

She was a member of the Hands All Around Quilting Club, Quilts and More Girls Group and the Senior Citizens Quilting Group as well as the Arbor Day Foundation, Sierra Club and Civil Air Patrol.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Claude William Walsh, on January 22, 1994, second husband, James David Nix, on March 19, 2012; sister, Patsy Ramsey of Butler, KY; and a brother, Julius Yelton of Kentucky.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Louise Hunt and husband, C.D., of Beaver and Barbara Elaine Painter and husband, Tom, of Oak Hill; and three sisters, Jean Bryan and husband, Ted, of Xenia, OH, Janet Delaney and husband, Joe, of Falmouth, KY, and Faye Rhomburg of Louisville, KY.

Also surviving are her only granddaughter, Ka Fortner and husband, Jason, of Beckley, and special friend, Rita Holliday of Fayetteville.

Services will be on January 20, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, in Oak Hill, with Pastor Randy McGuire officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

CYCLONE — Rodney Osborne, 41, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013.

Violette Paula Rusch

SHELBURNE, Vt. — Violette Paula Rusch, 94, formerly of White Sulphur Springs and Lewisburg, passed away Dec. 23, 2012.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with Father Chapin C. Engler officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Loretto Cemetery at the church. There will be no visitation.

George Kenneth Tharpe

CRAIGSVILLE — George Kenneth Tharpe, 80, of Craigsville, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with the Rev. Brent Franco officiating. Interment will be in Denna Cemetery, Holcomb. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in the funeral home.
