George Edward ‘Doody’ Lyons Sr.
JESSE — George Edward (Doody) Lyons Sr., 86, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013, following a long illness.
Born April 30, 1926, in Winding Gulf, W.Va., he was the son of the late Roy Lee Lyons and Blanche Duncan Lyons McCoy.
George worked in the coal mines for 45 years and retired from Eastern Coal #2, in Kopperston, W.Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country proudly during World War II. He was a member of Pineville Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Lyons; four sisters, Ruby Lyons, Nellie Mutter, Bertha Walton, and Lois Danner; a great-grandson, Tim Westbrook Jr.; and a son-in-law, Bailey Fritz Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruby Athleen Workman Lyons; six children, Roy Lyons and wife, Loretta, of Winfield, Linda Lyons Fritz of Beckley, Larry Lyons and wife, Cynthia, of Jesse, James Lyons and wife, Patricia, of Jesse, Delores Lyons Argabright and husband, Harris (Rocky), of Lynco, and George Lyons Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Mexico, NY; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A celebration of George’s life will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Matthew Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Military rites will be performed by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.
Friends may gather with the family from noon until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Grandsons will have the honor of serving as pallbearers.
