Mary Lettie Saunders (Maw-Maw) Bostic
“Soon you will read in the newspaper that I am dead. Don’t believe it for a moment. I will be more alive than ever before.” (D.L. Moody)
Mary (Maw-Maw) Bostic was born on February 19, 1917, at Dorr, W.Va. After a full, well-lived life of 93 years, she entered into eternal joy with Jesus on September 1, 2010.
Maw-Maw, as she was affectionately known by all whose lives she touched, lived out her Christian testimony every day. She was a member of Bruffey’s Methodist Church and also attended the Meetin’ Place in Hollywood. For Maw-Maw, “church” was every day as she lived what she believed. No one ever felt unwelcome in her home. She made everyone feel as though she was their “mom” or “Maw-Maw” — and she was.
In her younger days, she worked hard on the farm where she and her husband Fred raised their ten children. Maw-Maw was small, but her fortitude was great. She and Fred made that farm a home that their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren enjoy to this day. Anywhere Maw-Maw was could be called “home.” She was the glue of our family — and she always will be.
Maw-Maw lived through the Great Depression. During that time, Maw-Maw graduated from Richwood High School in 1937, which was considered an impressive accomplishment for a young lady living in that era. Maw-Maw’s experiences during this period of history in her life helped shape her into the wise, resilient, strong woman that everyone knew and loved. The strength of Ma-Maw’s spirit helped many a person through trying times in their own lives.
Maw-Maw’s compassion and generous heart extended from the smallest creature to any person who was in need of kindness. Her gentle, loving spirit encouraged all who knew her to try to be more like her. With her passing, the world is bereft of one of its finest angels in human form — but Heaven is now graced with her presence.
Loved ones who have gone to eternity before her are: her husband, Fred C. Bostic; her parents, Cecil and Rebecca Forren Saunders; her brothers Warren, Aubrey, and Raymond Saunders; and her son-in-law, Ralph Fetter.
Maw-Maw’s memory lives on in those who anticipate their own joyful reunions with her someday: sons and daughters: Constance Ann (Connie) Helvey and husband, Fred; Vernon Edward Bostic and wife, Frances; Stephen Henry Bostic and wife, Mildred; Martha Ruth Hunter and husband, Thomas; Rebecca Joyce Fetter Martin and husband, Bob; Diana Fay (Fay) Sloan and husband, Michael Wayne; Nancy Lou Miller and husband, Duane; Arminta Joan Lucas and husband, James Arnold; Susan Jane Pyne and husband, Olin Randall Sr.; Judith Gail Landis and husband, Harold (Buck); 33 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and sisters Alma Boggs, and Wilma Younkin.
“Thank you, Mom (and Maw-Maw), for teaching all of us how to love.”
Visitation will be held at Groves Funeral Home today, Friday, September 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Funeral Home on Saturday, September 4, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Carlisle Cemetery in Hollywood.
