Donald Dean Acord

Donald Dean Acord, 76, of Daniels, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at McDowell Nursing and Rehab, Gary, W.Va.

Delmar Mike Bennett

HINTON — Delmar Mike Bennett, 88, of Hinton, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012.

Born January 24, 1924, at Madams Creek, Hinton, he was a son of the late Mike J. and Ethel Faye Waddell Bennett.

Delmar served in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Lenawee APA-195 in the Pacific during World War II where he ferried troops to the islands and brought wounded soldiers out. He was anchored alongside USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay when Japan boarded the Missouri for official surrender to General McArthur.

Delmar was retired from the Ohio State University as an electrician and attended Bellepoint Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Janice Bond Bennett; three brothers, Charles Atley Bennett, Nathan Donald Bennett and Arthur Glen Bennett; one sister, Doris Evelyn Hamrick.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Vida Marie Farley Bennett of Hinton; one son, Michael Jennings Bennett and wife Celene of Woodbridge, Va.; three grandchildren, Amanda Renee Imhoff, Caitlin Su Bennett and Brian Michael Bennett; one great grandson, James Evan Imhoff; one brother, Dean Bennett and wife Janice of Hinton; one sister, Leola Wiseman of Talcott; three step-children, Dean Young, Betty Jane Lane and Billy Joe Young.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, with Pastor David Board officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton.

Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Rev. Wiley ‘Stacy’ Brooks

JESSE — Rev. Wiley “Stacy” Brooks, 87, of Jesse, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at his residence.

Born April 2, 1925, at Jesse, he was the son of the late Wiley Brooks Sr. and Lela Workman Brooks.

Rev. Brooks was a member of the Guyandotte Baptist Church and was a former pastor of the church for 19 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II. He was a retired coal miner from Eastern Associated Coal Corporation’s Kopperston mine.

Rev. Brooks was a former pastor at the Bellemeade Baptist Church at Sabine for nine years and at the First Baptist Church at Justice for three and one-half years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Stewart; a sister, Pauline Shiflett; and two step brothers, Denver Canterbury and Clinton Canterbury.

Survivors include his wife, Ada Jewell Brooks; two sons, Steve Brooks of Princeton and Danny Brooks and his wife, Paula, of Jesse; two brothers, Lewie Brooks of Cleveland, Ohio and Dewey Brooks of Indiana; four sisters, Betty Kinospi and Virginia Fitch, both of Chicago, Ill., Leona Stewart of Pineville and Kathleen McGraw of Meadow Bridge; a stepbrother, Donald Brooks of Florida; a son-in-law, Bob Stewart of Tavares, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Rick Stewart and his wife, Debbie, Brian Stewart and his wife, Angie, Jonathan Brooks, Jewell LaClair, Katie Hill, Amie Mullins and Drew Hill; five great-grandchildren, Hannah and Jacob Stewart, Allison and Loren Stewart, and Jillian Baird.

A celebration of Rev. Brooks’ life will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the Guyandotte Baptist Church, Jesse, with the Rev. Harrison Abbot, the Rev. Ron Harvey and Brian Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Pallbearers are Brian Stewart, Rick Stewart, Jonathan Brooks, Jonathan Stewart, Bob Cook and Fairley Jewell.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the church.

Marshall Hamilton

NAOMA — Marshall Hamilton, 75, of Naoma, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at his home.

Marshall was born February 17, 1937 in Whitley Co., Ky.

He enjoyed and loved his family and friends but especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded by his loving wife of 43 years, Betty, his loving sister, Wanda and parents, Harvel and Mattie.

He is survived by seven children, Dexter “Jodi” of Whitesville, Tony “Julie” of Cynthiana, Ky., Karen of Knoxville, Tenn., Bonnie of High Point, N.C., Marshall Joe “Kilie” of Alabama, Kimberly “Sam” of Grafton, Ohio, Erick of Naoma, W.Va. He was a proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and one brother, Lorenzo of Dameron.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Horse Creek, with the Rev. David Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.

Friends may call two hours prior to the services Thursday at the church.

MT. HOPE — Mr. Vernon Jones, 63, of Mt. Hope, died Tuesday, December 4, 2012.

Verna Lee Lambert

PINEVILLE — Verna Lee Lambert, 81, of Pineville, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at her residence following a short illness.

Born July 24, 1931, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Amanda Bryant Arthur.

Mrs. Lambert was a member of the Coon Fork Church, Keyrock. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and needlepoint. She also loved being with her family especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Lambert; two infant daughters; a granddaughter, Lisa Lambert; and a sister, Ruby Hughes.

Survivors include two sons, Stephen Lambert and his wife, Patsy, of Keyrock and David Lambert and his wife, Sarah, of Rockview; a brother, Cleveland Arthur of Virginia; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Verna’s life will held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Bill Goode officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

John Randall ‘J.R.’ McGraw

John Randall “J.R.” McGraw went home to be with his lord Monday, December 3, 2012, from the Salem Rehabilitation Center at Salem. John was 51 years old and shared his home in Heavener Acres with his loving wife, Regina Channell McGraw. John and Regina were married on January 12, 1986, and enjoyed 26 years of marriage.

J.R. was born Wednesday, March 29, 1961, in Mullens, a son of the late Susie Claiborne McGraw and Paul McGraw. Also preceding him in death was his only son, Dewey Lee Mann during 2005, three sisters, Laura, Patty, and Suzanne, and two brothers, Samuel and Paul Jr., and his mother-in-law, who loved him as a special son, Dorothy Channell.

Left to cherish J.R.’s memory besides his wife, three brothers, Kenny McGraw and wife, Yvonne, of McGraws, Rick McGraw and wife, Judy, of Clairmont, N.C., Andy McGraw and companion, Paula, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Jan Shumate and husband, Mike, Maridonna, and Caroline, all of McGraws, his father-in-law, Eugene Channell; several nieces and nephews, and a very special cousin that J.R. thought the world of, Hurk McGraw, a special little girl he referred to as his little “Peanut Butter,” Olivia, little buddies, RJ, Jacob, Anthony, Kyle, and Alavana.

J.R. was a high school graduate having attended the schools of Wyoming County. Although he was disabled, he loved being around kids and playing Santa. He coordinated the “kids’ games” for the McCords Family Reunion and was the Bingo caller for the Montgomery Reunion. He enjoyed collecting stuffed, as well as, ceramic pigs, having collected about 2,500 of them.

Visitation will be held at the Randolph Funeral Home on Thursday, December 6, 2012,  from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Hurk McGraw and Rev. Randall Montgomery will officiate. Interment will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the McGraw Family Cemetery at McGraws.

Jackie David Miller

UNION — 2 Timothy 4:7 – “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

Jackie David Miller, age 78, of Union, went to meet his Savior, Monday, December 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born June 28, 1934 at Wikel, W.Va., he was the son of the late Addison and Mary Vest Miller.

Jackie had retired from the W.Va. Division of Highways, worked as a painter and was an artist. Jackie was a faithful member of the Rock Camp Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was passionate about his music and artwork. He sang folk music and played many different instruments, but his favorite was the harmonica. He created pen and ink landscape scenes, which were displayed in the Union Library. Jackie loved animals, especially his faithful dogs. He gave faithfully to charities, with his favorite being St. Jude Children’s Hospital. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, raising his children in a Christian home. He passed down the principals of Christ to the next generation. Grandpa Jack loved his grandchildren and had a special place in his heart for each of them. Although Jackie’s journey in life has come to an end, we celebrate knowing that his eternal life has just begun and his loved ones will be reunited with him shortly.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leon and Harold Miller.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45  years, Eva Mae Weikle, three sons, David Miller and wife Sally of Wikel, Jerry Miller of Sinks Grove, W.Va. and Roger Miller of Pulaski, Va.; one daughter, Ruth Miller Riffe and husband Craig of Willow Bend, W.Va.; two brothers, Marvin Miller and wife Jacque of Ronceverte, W.Va., Billy Miller and wife Kathy of Ogden, Utah; four sisters, Ruth Gamble and husband Dick of Ogden, Utah, Linda Weikel and husband Richard of Pickaway, W.Va., Barbara, Morgan of Ronceverte, Darlene Anglen and husband Gene of Ogden, Utah, four grandchildren, Arianna, Gabrielle, Alison and Benjamin Miller.

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, December 6, 2012, at the Rock Camp Missionary Baptist Church,  with Pastor Paul Broyles and Obie Dupree officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery at Wikel.

Steven Earl Owens

MABEN — Steven Earl Owens, 55, of Maben, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in Cleveland Clinic, following a long illness.

Born May 8, 1957, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Earl and Georgia Trump Owens.

Steven attended the Pineville Christian Fellowship Worship Center. He worked for over 30 years in construction as a pipe-fitter and welder. He enjoyed camping, fishing, travelling, being outdoors and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Mona Canada Owens; a son, Justin Aaron Owens of the home; two daughters, Darah Jennelle Owens of Cross Lanes and Ashleah Monique Owens of the home; a brother, Eric Owens of McGraws; and two sisters, Kathy Owens of Mullens and Robin Farley of Bassett, Va.

A celebration of Steven’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the Christian Fellowship Worship Center, Pineville, with Pastor Bill Goode officiating. Burial will follow in Canada Family Cemetery, Saulsville.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Family will receive friends from noon until time of service at the church on Wednesday.
