James ‘Buddy’ Brent Burdette

MEADOW CREEK — James “Buddy” Brent Burdette, 73, of Meadow Creek died Saturday, June 25, 2011.

Larry C. Griffith

RICHWOOD — Larry C. Griffith, 62, of Richwood, WV, passed away at home Friday, June 24, 2011.

He was born at home in Clay County, WV, to the late Brian and Ilo Griffith of Richwood, WV.

He was preceded in death by his Parents and Sister Karla Curry.

He was a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam Era. He served on the ship USS Ranger and also the USS Hornet while serving on the USS Hornet in 1969. He helped rescue the Apollo 12 Astronauts after splashdown in the sea. He was a Boy Scout and went on to becoming an Eagle Scout.

He also delivered the Charleston Paper many years and worked at Lowry Grocery Store on the corner of Oakford Ave. and Maple Street, while he was still in school; that’s where he learned to be a meat cutter by trade.

Survivors: Wife, Karen Griffith, Richwood, WV; Sons, Chris Griffith and James Roberts; Sisters, Phyllis Howell and Robert, Charleston, WV, Mary Rader and Jerry, Canvas, WV, Sue Sparks, Lebanon, OH, Marilyn Belletto, Canvas, WV.

Memorial service will be Monday, June 27, 2011, at 7 p.m. in Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, WV. Visitation will be Monday, June 27, 2011, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, WV, with Evangelist Denver Jarvis officiating.

Larry’s wishes to be cremated will be honored. He also would like in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the cure of diabetic foundation.



Hilda Lee Watkins Lilly

Hilda Lee Watkins Lilly, 89, of Beaver, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011, following a short illness. Born September 30, 1921, in Clinchfield, VA, she was the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Lacey Virginia Luttrell Watkins. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Glendon Lilly, and sister, Lacye Katherine Watkins.

After graduating from Mullens High School, Hilda earned an Associate Degree in Business, and was then employed for several years as office manager at the old Beckley Hotel (in its hey-day!) and for 16 years as office manager for Ross P. Daniel, MD.

Upon retirement, Hilda helped open the Shady Spring Public Library, where she worked as assistant librarian for seven years. For 66 years, Hilda loved and was a very active member of the Beaver United Methodist Church. Although a very modern, organized, and independent woman, Hilda was accomplished at needlework and was a most talented seamstress. She also loved books and reading.

Survivors include a son, Michael E. Lilly and wife Marcy, grandson, Matthew S. Lilly, and granddaughter, Megan E. Lilly, all of Beckley; brother-in-law, Rev. Rexford Lilly of Knoxville, TN, sisters-in-law, Agatha Lilly of Scott Depot, WV, and Edith Lilly of MacArthur, WV; and nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at the Beaver United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Stadelman officiating.

Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call Tuesday at the church one hour prior to service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beaver United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 523, Beaver, WV 25813.

Judy P. (Harvey) Miller

GREENWOOD — Judy P. (Harvey) Miller, 72, of Greenwood went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Judy was born Dec. 4, 1938, to the late Marvin and Agnes Harvey. She is also preceded in death by her husband Herbert Miller.

She was a member of the Bright Prospect Missionary Baptist Church of Cyclone. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She loved God, her church, and family more than anything, especially her granddaughters who were her world.

She is survived by her son Brian and his wife Mary Etta and granddaughters Paige and Allison all of Bob White; brothers and their wives: Dockie and Dottie Harvey of Cyclone, Odie and Greta Harvey of Fairdale, Thomas and Jenny Harvey of Greenwood; a sister and her husband Kathy and Gail Harvey Johner of Greenwood; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the Bald Knob United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at 12 p.m. with Rev. David Cook, Matthew Johner, and Rev. Henry Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Madison. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. Handley Funeral Home Danville is in charge of arrangements.

The family would like to say a huge thank you to Debbie Mitchell, her caregiver; Lisa Thompson and all of the doctors and nurses who took care of Judy at St. Mary’s Medical Center and Cornerstone Hospital.

George Herndon ‘Judge’ Wickline

UNION — George Herndon “Judge” Wickline, 84, of Union passed away Sunday morning, June 26, 2011, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a long illness.

Mr. Wickline was born at Sprague, WV, February 20, 1927, a son of the late George Washington and Ellen Hester Mann Wickline.

He had retired as farm manager for Walnut Grove Farm at Union with over 50 years service, he was affiliated with the Baptist faith and he was an avid sportsman.

Mr. Wickline was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Everett, Ernest and Donald Wickline.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Isabella Glover Wickline of Union; 2 sons, Danny Wayne Wickline and wife, Kristina, of Union, Michael Scott Wickline and wife, Patricia, of Frankford; a daughter, Connie Faye Parker and husband, Charles “Bo,” Jr., of Union; 7 grandsons, Samuel Joel Wickline, Joshua Wayne Wickline, Albert Sonny Serreno, II, and wife, Suzanne, Chad Clark Parker, Cody Cameron Parker, Jacob Ryan Wickline and Andrew Scott Lainer Wickline; a great-grandson, Taylor Joel Serreno; 2 great-granddaughters, Elle Lee Serreno and Chloe Sanae Wickline; a brother, Darrold Keith Wickline and wife, Mary, of Beckley; a sister, Alma Jean Glover and husband, Grady, of Beckley; 2 sisters-in-law, Alma Jane Wickline and Hattie Wickline both of Beckley.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Groves Funeral Home chapel in Union with the Rev. Gene Fullen and Rev. Nancy Bulla officiating. Burial will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery at Pickaway.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
